She looks big, strong and Amazonian, and if you'd told me she was 6ft 2 I wouldn't have been surprised. She's just cut large, as it were - there's not much fat on that woman.

Sizing appears to be completely random. My measurements are currently 40, 32, 41 (42 round my arse), which makes me a wee shade larger than I am in my avatar (though I have no idea why my waist is so small right now - at this size it's usually 33 and a bit). That means I wear between a size 12 and 14 normal clothes, am technically about a size 18 according to paper patterns, and in the US would be a 10-12 or possibly a 2 depending on how expensive the garment was (lol). Anyway, I can't buy costumes - the ones I see at festivals etc here are all teeny things designed for teeny Egyptians. Yeah, I know technically I'm too fat to wear bedleh according to some people but I like it, so there. Seeing that there are costumes at Dahlal that, if I had a grand to spare, I could really wear! Well, that's exciting to me!

I had 34 inch hips once. Of course I was 16 and quite ill at the time, but I can still remember the tape measure going round and being amazed.

She sure looks great. I am 5'9" and wear a size 14-18, depending on the clothing. My body definately doesn't look like hers, just goes to show that size really doesn't mean anything.

Zumarrad,
I am not trying to just blindly flatter you, but I really don`t see why you or anyone would find you too big for a bedlah? Yes, I have seen some dancers who should not wear them, but you look quite firm in your photos. Just my thought.
Oh, and I have sold many a costume here that would have fit you quite well. Maybe not your taste or budget, but they are there. Just gotta look everywhere.

LOL it's a question of measurements. My measurements are big and so some say if you measure more than X, you shouldn't wear bedleh/costumes that are less covering/etc. But as I and many others (including this model!) prove, measurements are only numbers and you can't guess what a person's body looks like from how many inches around the hips it is. I am still pretty firm, but another few years and I'll be getting a body stocking, I think. I do like dresses, too - I think they're chic.

Best gross flattery story ever: my teacher (who is hot) was once asked what dress size she wore by a punter. She told him 14 (technically true, she likes her clothes loose). He informed her this could not be possible as he could never be attracted to a woman over size 12, and yet he fancied her. EW! And also, ha!

I met her yesterday. I was shopping at Dahlal for a new skirt…and of course to check up on my “boi” Tim.
She had just finished a photo shoot…she is really beautiful, very sweet, and REALLY tall (she said 6’)
This is what I got from her:
Her name is Loryn, she is a dancer (for the local crowd, she is a member of Belly Dance Mirage)
She is not Samira’s sister, but they are troupe mates, and best friends.
(she has beautiful skin…she has a real glow)

This is what I got from Tim:
I convinced him to go to lunch with me so he could talk me through altering one of my mom’s old bedlahs…I told him that I had met the new model, and that I thought she was really pretty…I asked if she was considered “Full Size”? He raised his eyebrow and said “have you been reading Buhz”?
He said Loryn wears a size 18…”full size” is a shopping tool, not a indictment of someone’s value as a person (for those of you who have had the joy of meeting Tim, you know he refers to himself as a “big boned girl” only his personality is “full sized”)
She’s a gourmet’ pastry chef.
He said she looks more like Samira’s sister than her actual sister.
They just had her daughter in for a photo shoot of some new children’s stuff…he said she was so excited she practically vibrated through the first two costumes.
Tim obviously adores her, and said he is planning on using her as inspiration for new full size designs…so ladies, plan on seeing more of her.
She and the blond model (her name is Carla) have the same size hip and ribcage but Loryn’s cup size is smaller…but in the Unitards he said Carla is a L/XL, but Loryn is deffinately a XL
Model height info:
Samira is about 5’6”, Penny (fuller bust) is about 5’5”, Carla is 5’7”, Laura (tall and thin) is 5’9”, and Loryn is 6’

THanks, those measurements above are really helpful. I know that if a costume fits Samira or Penny on dahlals site, it will *usually* fit me, with a little hemming!

This interests me, as I'm 6'0" and while I'm not as skinny as I used to be, I am also big-boned with broad shoulders. I was once the victim of a very bad pick-up line comparing me to Xena, Warrior Princess.

It's so hard to find bras that will fit my broad shoulders and wide rib cage. Not to mention a skirt that will go past my ankles!

I'm glad that Dahlal is featuring a variety of body types on their site, as it's important to note that there's more than one way to be petite, and there's more than one way to be full-figured.

The height/size info is interesting.
I LOVE Tim's description of "Full size" as being a shopping tool not an indictment of someones value as a person. I think we all carry around different judgments passed on to us by the media and it's refreshing to see more of the variety of beauty in the world portrayed on belly dance sites.

I'd love to also see beauties from a wider variety of ethnic backgrounds, a truly petite girl (under 5'4"), a petite, really curvy girl and a naturally very slender/athletic body type.

Someone mentioned a while back about the possibility of a non-muffin-top belt. Not exactly that, but related- a beautiful dancer friend of mine has some of her belts made to eliminate tummy pooch. The designer puts a pad on the inside front of the belt- so where her tummy would stick out a little over the belt normally, it just sticks out over the pad a little, giving her a smoother line in front. I don't know if I'm describing it well enough. But something like this might be possible at the back/side of the hips where women tend to have lovely (shimmylicious) hip padding. Just an idea.

Lol, to Tim's responce. I think she is beautiful and least I know if I did have a costume made for me there, my long legs wouldn't be a problem, or my measurements.

The only person that would apparently have a problem with it, is that lady from the ??? something against obesity. Don't know if you remember this lady but she made a comment on the girl from American Idol, or that model that use to boo all the plus size models on America's Next Top Model.

The media is crazy. Today I was watching Extra and they were all hyped up about Jessica Simpson loosing twenty pounds. Okay, I wasn't aware she need to lose ten pounds.

Too bad that the media doesn't include everyone in their beauty. It really is a shame. IF anyone listen's to it, pay attention to loving life, you only live once!

Antimony, BD addiction was quoting Samira Shuruk, not mentioning Samira the (non-full-size) Dahlal model. Ummm, does that make Samira half-sized? Or less than a full dancer?

Loryn and Carla are both beatiful women and very, very nice people. You can see them side by side in the 'egyptian -- dresses' section (page 1), modeling the pailette dresses and the fringe dresses. They're similar in size/shape, actually.

Loryn is very tall, so she carries a large size beatifully.

Zumarrad, we have exactly the same measurements (well, my waist is your 'usual' size, not your current skinny size).

I wear bedleh. :tounge:

And I find costumes that fit me regularly, on Bhuz and at Dahlal. True, the majority of costumes are smaller, but there are more than I could ever buy that do fit!
