Best material for making a skirt

Our troupe is trying to get a more uniform look and we're trying to decide on a skirt. Since we're in a conservative, rural area where we are a real curiosity, we are aiming for more of a tribal look rather then cabaret flash. Any suggestions on best type of fabric would be greatly appreciated!

Are you making or buying your skirts?

Personally, I if were you and buying, I would go with a dark coloured mat satin or brocade. Barrign that, one of the embroidered turkish skirts ala We3 belly dance, simply because both are somewhat veristal in what you can match them with, giving you lots of options and can easily cross over in styles. Plus, as your performance wardrobes expand, either of these styles can be used for layering and if your troupe expands they are easily acquired.

The other question is what style of skirt are you looking at? Full circle, teired, gypsy?

I like the we3 look, but I get mine from modemystique.com (they have tribal items, too).

If you want more of an earthy, solid look, I'd consider weather. Much as I love velvets & satins, in the summertime around here you don't want to wear anything but cotton, preferably gauze, or silk.

Thanks for the great advice, Tahira and Lauren! I took some of my skirts to class tonight, including one of my WE3 turkish embroidered ones, and we tried to come to a decision. They really liked a circle skirt I made from silk essence so we may go that route. I slipped on my 25 yard gypsy skirt from Moondancebellydance and now they all want one of those! Guess I'll have to be choreographing a skirt dance soon

Thanks again!
