The New Bhuz Weigh In - August Edition
Hi everyone,
We are starting a new thread for our support group. We had great success on the last thread which reached near UBDC proportion!
You can read our start and progress over 3 months here at this link.
Here it is the first day of August, and I'm happy to say that I feel really ready to tackle the next hurdle of my weight loss - the last 10 pounds.
Also, a shout out to Michelle who said she had got through a milestone today - breaking through the barrier of the 170s into the 160s. That's a major deal. Me, right now I'm dealing with breaking out of the 160s into the 150s. Those "humps" over the "0s" are nightmarishly long!

Great!
I'm starting this month out STUCK at 162 pounds, where I've been for a couple of weeks despite my very best efforts. Scale dropped to 160.5 one day, but bounced right back.
By the end of August, I'd like to be 158. Maybe even 157.

p.s. I've decided to just share my embarassing numbers freely online because, well, frankly, no one really cares!

O.K. I have not really been participating in the bhuz weigh thread because I have been so depressed. Last August I was 146 pounds and dropping; I almost slipped out of my costume on stage at Lauren's show (eep!), and was sliding around inside my size 10 jeans. I had 135 in sight and was very optimistic!
This august I'm back up to 156 pounds, can't get into one of my costumes, my size 10 jeans have a major muffin top, I'm not going to the gym, feeling crappy, and I just ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast. I have fallen off the carb wagon HARD and I can't get up.
Help!

Hah! so true. I don't mind either. And, my embarrassing numbers are your embarrassing numbers so - we're in good company.
We have to look at this way - they aren't as embarrassing as when we started out together back in March - we've done great overall - Lauren, we've lost over 15 pounds in our off bhuz competition!

poor you!
Sedonia,
You can get up! Here's the deal. If you were on a low carb diet and then got back on the carb trail - then eating right again will see you back down quickly. Just make little steps.
Tomorrow when you wake up - don't have a PBJ - just have a tablespoon of PB or a handful of peanuts.
Personally - I think some carbs are fine. Just cut out the white refined wheat bread items. I can't remember if you were on Atkins or not, and if so, that diet if done too strictly is not successful over time for a lot of people.

I am determined to lose at least 5 pounds to my 10 lb. goal this month.
Went out to eat at my favorite italian restaurant last night with hubby, and had NO bread - and NO salt....
So that was a major deal for me, as they have the best bread in town.

I'm in for August - trying hard to lose twenty pounds total but, of course, not all of them in August!!! That would just not be realistic!!! I'm 155 today - way toooo heaavvvyyyy for my 5'4" smaller boned frame. So, goal for this month - eight pounds!

Im just determined to loose SOME weight by August 25th. I dont care how much. 5 lbs would be a dream. I guess that PB&J I had for breakfast wasnt a good way to start (even tho it was 100% whole wheat, low fat PB and low sugar preserves). But Ive got a 4 hour workshop today and Im sorry but the oatmeal and banana just wont get me through lunch! And Im out of bananas.:(

Ladies I'm telling ya that tennis works. I joined a beginners league after I had my son and I lost the weight I gained and looked great. After the season was over I never picked it up again and here it is 9 years later and I'm loosing weight again. It's good to sweat out those pounds fast and it's fun. You don't have to be Maria Sharapova to play tennis so give it a try. Tennis and belly dance can't be bad.
Thanks for the shout out Danni!

Realistic goals
I'm not sure what is realistic for me this month. I guess if I go by the pattern, then it's 1 pound per week maximum. I suspect I won't do that well - with some swings down and then back up to settle in at maybe 2 pounds for the month.
My real goal needs to be exercise. I must find a routine I like. I have to say that the heat this month did not have me wanting to exert myself at all.
If I lose 2 pounds per month from August - December, that will be my 10 pound goal weight loss. I'm okay with that.
Clearly, what is true is that time flies by and revamping eating habits is a long term thing - the benefits are slow but real, and dramatic drops or gains are untrustworthy benchmarks for really making positive life changes.

Okay...since two of my fave dancers BAHAIA and AZIZA have shared their stats, I guess I'll stop being vague! LOL I'm now holding at 5' 5"/141 and comitted to getting back to my comfortable weight of @ 135, where I can fit into all of my costumes except a few, which I never wear anyway. Even though 128 is my really slim weight, I think even 132 would be fine - I really don't want to be that skinny. I just want to be fit and shapely. At 135 my size 6 "Editor" pants from Limited Express fit just right. I can wear them now, but have a tiny bit of muffin top.
My neighbor just told me last night that she has committed herself to losing her baby weight (the old story - younger son is age 4 and never lost all the weight since then) and is walking every day, so we may start walking together sometimes too. Cool!
As for my method, I haven't actually been dieting in the sense of trying to maintain a certain ratio of carbs to protein, counting calories, etc. My way of coaxing my body to let go of extra weight is to reduce my overall intake, limit what I eat to nutrition-rich, lower fat foods (but not non-fat) and resist snacking and eating after dinner. I don't think a pb&j sandwich for breakfast is a disaster, as long as it's light on the P and made with a nutritious whole grain bread. And maybe eat half of it rather than the whole thing.
I'm not "anti-diet" because I know that for many people that's the only way to jumpstart their body to leave homeostasis, but dieting puts me into a yo-yo pattern, so I just use the "less food, more exercise" formula. It's slow, but I'm getting there.
YAY for the Bhuz Weigh-In thread! It works!

Everyone's enthusiasm is infectious
I'm so excited for everyone. We're really making a lot of progress together!
So I'm a hair under 170. My goal for August is to lose 6 pounds. I also need to add two dance practice sessions and two of my mini work outs. The work outs are no big deal and take less than ten minutes. It's just some resistance work to keep from losing muscle.
Gotta share a success: I bought jeans for the first time in 9 years. Even though they are a size 18 and from Lane Bryant I love them. They fit me perfectly and hug the curves without fluffing them up.
My current dieting method: keep clear of all sugar except fat-free dairy. I have to have my skim milk! I avoid cheese, potatoes and simple carbs. I do have a weakness for lunch at the restaurant that has hummus & falafel. Comes with tabouleh and a cucumber/tomato salas so it's very healthy. That's my indulgence.
I'm really big on soups. I'm not a very good cook but do well with soups. I've had a ton of gazspacho in the last few weeks. It lasted a long time in the fridge because I used v8 juice as the "broth."
Veggies galore.
Later,
Beth

I dropped down to 143, but after a few days of indulgences am back up to 145 - I am 5'7" so it is not too bad. I am not going to beat myself up about the bad food choices - I made them consciously as a reward for an incredibly stressful week.
I am leaving for Dallas tomorrow morning and am going to get some good healthy snack type food and instant Kashi oatmeal. I am going to try to hit the gym tomorrow afternoon (weight day) once I check in at the hotel and I will do the elliptical tonight. I doubt I will have a chance to do anything else over the weekend, but if I can squeeze in a little bit on the elliptical, I will. I don't care if I don't lose anything over the weekend, I just don't want to gain anything more.
I still want to drop another 10 pounds - 135 is my ultimate goal.

*dusts Sedonia off and helps her back onto the carb wagon*
Sedonia was doing healthy low-carb. She's a biologist, so she knows what to do. Heck, most of us know what to do. It's the day-by-day doing that's hard.
Like Maria, going to an Italian restaurant and not eating bread. Makes me want to cry. But, as they say, nothing tastes as good as sliding around in your size 10 jeans feels! (or whatever size you'd like to slide around in)

My goal is another 10 lbs by the end of August. I lost about 5 in the last 2 weeks of July. I am basically doing protein for breakfast, steamed and fresh veggies for lunch. A snack somewhere along the way, and a 'regular' meal for dinner.
Walking, sit ups and pleanty of water seems to help as well.

Oh definitely. I wasn't trying to be "preachy" - just encouraging. But, refined wheat is evil.

Glad you guys are starting another weight loss month I have not participated yet but I am going to keep up. Maybe this will help me lose this extra weight I have been fighting for a long time. I have made a steady increase in weight over the last 4 years and if I am not careful I could become diabetic like my sister. I don't want that. My sugar level is always a little above average even with fasting. When I see my sister she always gets a gleam in her eye and wants to take my blood. I like to think she is trying to help but I don't know I think she has some repressed sister angst:) Anyway will keep up with this thread and congratulations to all who have been successful in reaching their goals or at least working towards them.

Welcome to the weight loss group. For several years I had high blood sugar. I met with a dietitian who specializes in diabetes. She told me that losing just 7% of your body weight and engaging in moderate exercise can prevent the onset of diabetes. My fasting glucose is now 96.
Just so I don't sound too Pollyana I actually weighed more for this last test. Difference is that I had gained 12 lbs, lost 10 but had been doing more dance practice for cardio. I didn't think it was possible but here I am with normal blood sugar and lowered cholesterol. I still have quite a way to go with the cholesterol. Good luck!

I'm going to join in as I need the help!
When I moved away from my home town (NYC) at the beginning of 2004 I weighed 138 & I thought I was chubby - fast foward to 2007 & add two states under my belt I got up to 160. I'm 5'5" and have a small frame & I really should weigh between 128 & 133 to look normal & fit into all my good clothes (that are now out of style).
Right now I am stuck at 149 & my goal is to get to 143 by the end of the month.
I've been working really hard but I have been stuck here for 2 weeks!!! I'm feeling a little dissapointed cause I have not fallen off the wagon. I'm hoping the ACN weekend will help me past the barrier but if something doesn't happen fast I'm going to eat some cookies instead of those horrible low carb bars
