HI Oily Skinned Dancers!!!

My skin is super super oily. I've heard about mattifying gels...do they work? Do oil control foundations work? I am looking for something that will help keep the greasies at bay. I am usually an oil slick about an hour after I wash my face (sometimes sooner)

Are there any other products ya'll recommend?

What cleanser/toner/moisturiser do you use?

Witch Hazel as a toner has done wonders for my skin re: oiliness. I don't really use foundation - except for performances, which is probably what you're interested in - I use a tinted moisturiser or nothing for day to day. Using heavier stuff makes my skin a lot worse.

When I perform and use a foundation, I put on lots of powder. That seems to do the trick.

What do you currently use?

I use proactive cleanser, morning and night, and at night I put on retin-a. I (sort of) have my acne under control but I still have the greasiest skin. Those oil blotting papers are a waste of money for me because I have to use at least 6 or seven of them to blot all the oil, and then the oil comes right back!!!

I tried witch hasel when I was younger. It never did the trick. Also, toners don't do much for me in the way of oiliness. They do get rid of the extra dirt on my face that my cleanser doesn't get to.

I know this sounds like an odd question, but are you sure you really have oily skin?

Although I truly had oily skin as a teenager, as I got older, my skin was both a total oil slick, and kind of dull at the same time. No mattifying or oil-control product really worked for me. A makeup artist finally convinced me that I did not in fact have naturally oily skin... what I actually had was dry skin that was so parched, that my oil glands were over-producing oil to try and seal in what little moisture I had in my skin. She convinced me to try using a rich but non-pore-clogging moisturizer. Within a week or two, all of my oiliness disappeared.

Obviously, that's not the case for most people with oily skin, but I figured I'd put it out there if oil-control type products aren't working for you.

No, no! My skin IS oily...I wish I had a picture. I've been oily since I was 9 years old. I'm 24 now...I did notice that the more I attempted to "dry out" my face, the more it produced oil. I had one dermatologist make me wipe my skin with alcohol swabs (back when I was in high school) BAD idea!!!

I'll give the mineral foundation a try, Kina. Which one do you recommend? I think L'oreal has one, and there's also Bare Minerals and Bare Escentuals (or something like that)

I love mineral foundation, but I would avoid both Bare Escentuals and all of the drugstore brands. They all include an ingredient called Bismuth Oxychloride, which can be a skin irritant. It can cause this kind of itchy feeling, especially when you get hot or sweat. It also makes the foundation have a kind of shine to it which you may not want if your skin is already oily.

I really like Everyday Minerals. #1) they offer free samples, #2) they have 4 different formulations, so you can get more or less coverage, and a choice between glowy or matte finishes, and #3) they have olive and neutral shades not just pink or yellow.

Ok, I just ordered the makeup samples. I'm not sure if they have the right color for me though. They have this super light color and then a really dark color...I'm not sure if these will work for me. I belong to the oxymoron group of people called light-skinned Black

I'll ask around and see if any of my mineral-makeup obsessed friends know of a mineral makeup brand that has an even broader selection of skin tones.

I like bare escentuals, good coverage, easy to use. I had terrible acne from stress, still flares up and I noted that when I wasn't wearing makeup b/c I was too busy to apply the foundation, I broke out more. It really helps to keep the oil under control in my T zone, etc.

My friends suggest that you try Alima. Their samples are not free, but they're quite inexpensive. If you like the mineral makeup experience, but the EM colors don't work for you, it's somewhere else to try.

Under It All by Ultima is the best stuff I've found for putting on under make-up to keep it in place. I wish it had been around when I was younger and my skin was oilier. Ulta has stopped carrying it, but I've seen it online. Also, during the day you can use blotting papers (sorta like tissue paper) and spritz with a water/refresher bottle (or vice versa), which help when you want to get rid of the shine but not the make-up.

i hope the mineral foundation will work for you, ejaghana. (i'm a bhuz-induced convert!) you might look into the blog on the everyday minerals site. i've noticed a lot of posts there by ladies asking advice/reporting on what colors worked for them (and requesting that new colors be made) - many of the posters seem to be racially mixed, latina, southeast asian, and of other beautiful-sounding richer skin tones. while i'm not really oily, i'm a combo gal, i have definitely noticed better oil control with minerals than with even oil-free foundation (which will still sit on my skin, look shiny, and sit in my pores, eww). i like either everyday's intensive or matte formulas.

another mineral makeup link you might try for inexpensive samples, different colors - http://www.beautyblisscosmetics.com/ . like everyday, their makeup has no bismuth oxychloride - theirs is even mica free if you're very sensitive.

i have tried a couple of mattifier products, though it was quite a long time ago - personally, they didn't work for me at all. they looked fakey and clogged my pores even though they said they wouldn't. unless there is something a lot better on the market these days, i'd skip them and find a foundation that really takes care of your skin situation instead of something to cover up.

I like Bare Essentuals the most. I have tried other brand name - drugstore - mineral products, and they're just not the same. The seem too powdery. Bare Essentuals always gave me that natural glow. Too bad I kept buyimg all kinds of different drugstore brands, now I am stuck with them for a long time.

I think minerals would work for you - they're easy on the skin, let it breath and not drying it out.

As a woman of color, I've found that Jane Iredale and Monave offer a wider range of colors that may suit your skintone better.

Also, as a fellow oily-skinned gal, might I suggest a primer? I've found that wearing a primer under my foundation when applying make-up can help to reduce shine. Smashbox primer is fabulous!
