Since no one else chimed in, I'll step up. This is the only thing I can think of. Los Angeles is driving distance for you, right, T.?
I love Michael Levine's in downtown Los Angeles (garment district). Big ole fabric store in two buildings (regular and upholstery). There are also tons of fabric stores in the vicinity, but Michael Levine's is actually a regular fabric store so might have more of a selection.
Worth a call anyway to see if they have it. Their selection is huge. I must never go there with Masouma again. Too dangerous.

How about this one:
http://www.denverfabrics.com/Merchan...duct_Count=126
It has 1/4 inch stripes, 58 inches wide. You can order a swatch for $.01 with free shipping. I ordered from them last Fall and had a good experience.

I always think of prisoners uniforms in relation to that fabric. Maybe you could put a number on it and have a little plastic ball and chain?

I myself always think of Jean Seberg's cool maillot top in Au Bout de Souffle, but that's just me.

For appliques, there's eBay. Seller em328 (his store is called Angeltrim), has lots. He's in Hong Kong.

I don't know how to do links, but you can just go into eBay and search for him under his seller name or his store. I have him saved in my favorite sellers column.

If you go to Michael Levine's, across the street is a place called Lacis Gallery or something like that. I think the guy's name is Dennis. Anyway they used to solicit trade from dancers and used to have lots of appliques. The last time I was there they had less, but worth checking out. They mainly do wholesale ( I think) but may give you a break on the retail side.

Hey Tina!
I am working on striped baladi costume right now too!
I'm going with pink and black and I'll post photos when I'm done b/c I'm going with an edgy take on the traditional style.
I have ordered from Denver fabric before and they're great - quick and reliable! The fabric in the link looks very jailbird or pirate to me too. If you are trying for traditional, I'd go with a wider stripe or something with a double stripe (pinstripe next to the wide stripe).
Can't wait to see what you do.
xo,
B

Tinah,
I think you will want to exit the 10 west (which is what I assume you're taking) at San Pedro Street - you'll go due north and then go I think west on Olympic to Maple then north on Maple. (you can probably exit at Los Angeles street as well) Michael Levine is between Olympic and 9th Street on Maple.
