I also like these cookbooks because the choice of foods (no meat, some fish and some dairy/eggs), the preparation (efficient), and the tone (positive, non-preachy) lines up very well with my attitude towards food.

Enjoy ;-)

I love the Moosewood series, although my fave is "Sundays at Moosewood" with all the international recipes. Love the African ones... Peanut Soup, Groundnut Stew....

Another omnivore checking in:

I totally understand the allergy issue. I have a sensitivity to onions, or rather, an enzyme in uncooked onions. While in college it was so bad that I couldn't even eat anything with powdered onion in it. Almost *everything* commercially available has powdered onion in it.

I definitely know the (literal and figurative) pain of trying to eat outside my own cooking, and always ask about food restrictions when inviting guests. I'm also a recipie junkie!

For my wedding we asked specifically for a vegetarian dish for a friend of ours and the caterer was happy to oblige, all he needed was to know where she would be sitting. So you may not have to pass on eating at the reception, if the bride and groom know enough in advance to prepare for it.

As for meat-tasting tofu: Theis same friend was born without the enzymes needed to digest meats (both parents are vegan) and is really teed-off about it, so she goes for any meat-tasting tofu she can get.

I think it really does boil down to *thinking* about diet. Thinking to ask about restrictions, and thinking to provide a host/hostess with options for the meal.

Wow...ran off at the figers there.

I am also slim, and typically would snack throughout the day at the office (ok, non-stop - usually dry cereals, trail mix and, um, pastries). I had worked at the same place for close to five years before many of my close coworkers realized I ate meat. They had assumed the entire time that I was a vegetarian. I found it rather funny when someone asked what I was doing one weekend and I mentioned going out for ribs. . . the shocked looks and finally the tentative question about why I had stopped being vegetarian.

<snipped>

I have to wonder why someone would make those assumptions (though I do find it amusing). I certainly wasnt offended, but I am curious. ;-)
Gosh, me too. I don't know if it's my politics, my looks, or what, but people always assume I'm a vegetarian. My real philosophy is that we shouldn't eat a dominating amount of meat - it's bad for the environment and not as healthy for us as a more balanced diet. So I often can be seen eating a vegetarian entree for lunch, but not everyone who eats tofu is a vegetarian!

I'm pretty pro-vegetarian though and I've considered becoming a vegetarian several times (always comes back to the fact, I love sushi.)

yeah that's true. that's why it's important to massage your breasts, not wear a bra, or at least not a tight one or one with underwire. this plus our shoulder shimmies and other excercises help to cleam the lymphs in that area and avoid breast cancer. i do try to remind myself not to rely on soy too much tho.

So, having noticed that I am feeling WAAAY more energetic in the afternoons after eating a no-meat lunch, I have decided to give this vegetarian thing a try. :)

I'm starting small, (still doing ovo-lacto) I'm aiming to start by adding in three meatless dinners over and above my usual breakfasts and lunches in the next week. Tonight will be my first day of completely meat free meals! I'm curious to see how I feel in a few weeks...

yay babsgrrrl,

thats great. u should feel wonderful. by still eating ovo-lacto it'sll not be such a shock to ur system. because eating eggs is like eating chicken. if u were going vegan i would suggest a cleansing fast first. but u should be fine. congratulations

Missed this thread but wanted to say "I'm a proud vegetarian since 1982!"

Friends assume you cannot read a menu! LOL! That was a good one!!

People assume a lot but whatever. I laugh and say that I like to eat my veggies because it is the fountain of youth!

Anyways, I like cheese, milk, ice cream......I just don't eat that fleshy stuff - but boy my husband sure does love his steak! ;-)

Hi everyone.....I've created a Vegetarian group on Bhuz...
I believe you can find it under "groups by topic" (is that what it's called?)

It's boring right now... nothing posted yet, no images either...I just wanted to get it out there for now. I also have the Wisconsin Bellydance group, if anyone here is from WI.
