cleaning coin belts

Hi everyone!

I just ordered a number of the "Antique Gypsy" coin belts & bra covers from Dahlal for my troupe. They have a sort of black oil on them which I believe is meant to protect the metal from oxidizing while in storage. What would Bhuzzers recommend for safely cleaning them?

My instinct is to dip them in warm water with a bit of detergent and towel them off.

Any thoughts?

sarah skinner has a 'how to prep your coinset before you sew it onto your base'article on her site:
www.bellydancer.info

I dipped them in warm water with a bit of detergent and vinegar, toweled them off and store them with a little sack of unboiled rice just in case. I like the tarnished loo,, but my set also has holographic sequins in some of the medallions that would be damaged by too much water.

I have the same or similar set. I have dipped it in water before. Just be sure that you get is dried off fast. I didn't and got a tiny bit of rust around the holes.

Not on cleaning but preserving shine - I bought an all-metal coin belt from a vendor who suggested spraying it w/clear shellac/varnish from the hardware store. I hung in on a chain-link fence, sprayed one side, let dry, sprayed the other. I store it in a zip lock plastic sack. It's probably at least five years old and looks brand new. I prefer shine to a patina.

thought about the 'shellacing' and wasn't sure how it would hold up(someone suggested that for the plastic necklemann beads too to keep their sheen and color) and was hoping to hear if it worked........seems like it does, Yay!
