When I was a child I had the same problem & here is what worked for me:
Either - braid hair with no band at the top and use the kind with the little balls that overlap so the ends won't break OR put hair in pink sponge rollers.(OK, so I was a kid in the early 70s!)
AND
use a satin pillow case. It really makes all the difference in the world!
Good Luck!!

We were joking that she needs rollers, cold cream on her face, and one of those eye masks!

Your kids are adorable! I wanna see a family pic of the whole cute Mish Mish family!

It sounds like you've found what works - I was just gonna suggest some detanglers that I've liked for my hair, in case you wanted to try something new. As a kid and preteen my hair was much finer, and I'd wash and condition, then spray in Infusium (moisturizing) leave-in conditioner. Now that my hair is thick and coarse, I'm liking phyto 7 or 9 leave-in conditioner. But since about age 10, I haven't been able to comb my hair through without using both a reg conditioner in the shower, followed by a leave-in.

before I chopped off all of my mid-back length hair, I had the most vicious tangles too. What worked best for me was a detangling intense conditioner (Aussie makes a fabulous and affordable one) and gently combing through the hair with a thick-toothed plastic comb while the conditioner was in in the shower. After that, I'd dry it about half way (try not to rub when you towel off, try a turbie towel that soaks up the water or just patting it down) and then French braid it. Good luck

formerly tangly herself,

Those things are brilliant. I still have the one I used when my hair was long - the difference is phenomenal and unlike an actual towel, there's no heavy weight on your neck.

I love those turban towel things. I thought my hair would be too long and bulky for them, but I was wrong. Now I have a few of them in the house and I love them!

I don't have fine hair, I have majorly THICK hair - so I don't know how useful my advice would be. Plus you've already had loads of good advice. In any case, my hair used to get really badly matted at the back of my head when I was younger. The things I did that helped was to:

Braid the hair into one long braid, no hairband at the top, and one of those non-metal hairbands at the bottom. I used to braid it while it was kind of damp too. Not sure that's a good thing for hair though, because my thick hair could still be damp when I woke up.

Actually, I brushed my har loads. It seemed to spread the hair's own oil along the shaft better, and stop the hairs from tangling on each other quite so easy.

I used LOADS of conditioner, and the occasional leave-in. I should say that my hair is THICK, dry and pretty coarse - so for your fine-haired little gal that might make it too heavy and flat.

I washed my hair rarely, and only ever shampooed once per wash. Any more made it dry and brittle, and it would just totally tangle.

Satin pillow case sounds interesting - but satin is such a static-generator isn't it? Might result in more tangles!
