How come nobody taught us about the omentum in school when we learned about the systems/organs of the body? Weird.

'Cause they thought it "momentum" was mispelled.

So! I'm on the Heartwalk team at my workplace. This is good because it has made sure that I keep up with my walking as I'm one of the people this year who will actually be doing the walk.

The bad thing is that last night I had to make TWO texas sheet cakes for our fundraiser lunch tomorrow. Chocolate cake is my ultimate downfall!!!!

I did a few smart things though - I ate dinner BEFORE I made the cakes so I wasn't actually hungry while baking (and could logic my way around what my stomach wanted me to believe). Plus, I had made some jello the other night so I stuck a spoon of that in my mouth when I was getting overly tempted by the sugary goodness that lay all about my kitchen. Not nearly as satisfying as chocolate, but it kept me from licking the ENTIRE bowl of batter. (I did have a taste, but only one!)

I'm so proud! I've never been able to resist chocolate cake before this! Woo! I just kept thinking of the gorgeous costume I'm buying myself when I get to goal weight and that helped tons.

I know I say this all the time, but I do mean it: you are all inspiring me on to better choices and a healthier, trimmer me! Go us!!

It's time for me to get back on the wagon, now that my house guests are gone.

By the way, if anyone wants a shirt or mug with this cartoon by my hubby, the Cafepress store is here:

http://www.cafepress.com/cp/store.aspx?s=shira_diet

All proceeds go to keeping www.shira.net up and running!

I'm also feeling the August effect, and the Sept. back-to-school vibe.

Went from a 10 (175 lbs) to a 12 (183 lbs) due to hubby and Dad's birthdays...could *not* resist the homemade Boston Cream Pie my uncle had made, truly decadent! I've been good for the past week and am back to 180 (Wheew!)

Dani- Try Tony Cheng's Mongolian Grill, you can get there from the metro, but i don't remember which line. They (used to, don't know if they still do) have a very comprehensive selection of meats, veggies and make your own sauces that they cook on a traditional flat grill. I'd recommend Pied Du Cochon (sp? Pig's foot pub) in Georgetown, but I don't think they're still open. Maybe hook up with Samira Shuruk for a night of ME food, I think she's close to DC.

Au Pied de Cochon closed after a fire a few years back. Another old school DC stand by.

Hi Shira,
I seem to recall that you lost quite a bit on weight watchers a few years back. I'm down thirty and have another 20 to go. I'm a little nervous about the whole maintenance process. How did you do it? Were you just conscious of what you at all the time. Whatever you tells us, don't tell us about omentum.

Hi Beth! Yes, I lost 55 pounds on Weight Watchers in 1999-2000. I kept that weight off without much difficulty for about 3-4 years. Starting around 2004, I started gaining weight again, but that's because we decided to sell our house in California and move to Iowa. That whole process was VERY stressful, so I started stress-eating and it also impaired my exercise routine, and as a result I did gain a bunch back, but not all of it.

At first, I would mentally tally the points every day, even though I didn't write it all down. And I would stay within my correct point count. (For maintenance, Weight Watchers has you add 5 points to your top of your range and to your bottom of your range.) Eventually, the eating habits that helped me lose the weight became natural and normal for me, so I didn't really have to consciously think about it any more, and that's why it was not too hard to keep the weight off.

One thing I need to do is to get back into an exercise routine similar to the one I was doing back when I lost the weight. I'm afraid I still haven't done that.

Again, I was staying out of this thread 'cause I didn't want to complain about my lack of success recently... seeing other people do well is nice, but too much of it tends to make you feel more like a failure.

I'm so glad I peeked in... Lauren, you sound like I feel and I just want to give you a great big hug! Dani - I can't wait to see pics of the new bangs!

Ummm... I have "back fat" photos too. Sumaya... Lauren... would you like me to take a stab at photoshopping them?

Wish I could do that to my hips! Blech.

Today I was supposed to be good. Hubby brought home Map-O-Spread and I wolfed down three pieces of toast loaded with butter and Map-O-Spread. (Love the stuff). Then, when I felt bad about it... I just kept eating that way for the rest of the day. Erg.

I'll try again tomorrow.

Congrats to those doing good - I'm really happy for you, honest! :-)

Vacationing sisters-enjoy lots of berries!

Egyptian angel-I don't think you can lose belly fat without losing some weight and exercise. Exercise alone will just tone it better.

I was 162 the other day. We had our annual dance presentation at globalfest on Saturday. I felt very comfortable in my skin. Attached is a pic of my progress. Definitely smaller around the middle.

Beth

Thanks Beth, I really didn't want to loose anymore weight, but if it means toning spare tyre then I'm going to have to.

We spent a good chunk of the summer at my husband's family cottage on Lake Ontario. I don't know what it is about that joint, but whenever we go there we feel let off the diet leash. Chips, crackers, pretzels, ice cream, cooneys.

Late summer is also a tough time to try to lose weight, even at home--the sweet corn is in season and I feel like I have to eat it *every* *single* *day* because it's just too good not to, and I don't eat corn at all the rest of the year. Oh, and the lovely local peaches.

So, I've gained five pounds since June. I'm trying not to get too exercised over that (npi); I plan to get back to my regular low-carb diet and fitness routine by the end of the month. Or the first frost, whichever is later.

I can relate. I subscribed to a dieting belly dancers forum on tribe a couple of years ago. I would never go there because I couldn't lose any weight and it got me down. I wasn't ready. It's funny but I have to be ready to lose weight. Otherwise I'd have lost the weight five years ago. It's not that I didn't want to. For some reason my body and will power weren't willing to work.

Also, forgive yourself for all that eating the other night. Sometimes we all go overboard. You don't even want to know about me and an entire container of raw cinnamon rolls.

If anything know that when you're ready, you will be successful.

Oh, and eat your vegetables

Hi, new to this thread, but I Need encouragement.
At my highest weight, 330 pounds, yep a big gal... My lowest was 176, 5'9 bigger bone frame.

Over the last 2 years it has been a roller coaster. I was bigger before the operation, All was well until I had a operation where they had to cut my stomach and wrap it around my esophagus to make me a new esophagus. For nine months after it. I could not eat real normal food. I was stuck with baby food, soups, jello. I could not even eat eggs..
Any way, after the nine months I was able to eat.... Let me tell you I did not hold back!! It is strange feeling of going from not being able to eat then one day wow your able to eat again, within limintions I have since gained 85 pounds within one year.
I just started back dance class, exercise @ a gym, eating fruits & veggies ETC.
I have lost 10 pounds, just within the last 3 weeks.

I just had a baby 11 months ago and though I haven't seen a scale in a while, I'm pretty familiar with my body and I would guestemate my weight at about 115-ish. I'm about 5'4."

I try to limit my drinking to water, wine or cranberry juice but if I really really want a soda I drink cherry coke zero. So far as I understand, sodas are one of the leading causes of obesity. :-P I've seen people chug those things like they were nothing! *bleh*

As far as food goes I'm a vegetarian. I eat a lot of fish and salad stuff. I have a Milano cookie addiction but I stay active so it doesn't bother me too much. I eat a lot of sushi, thats my power food. (Sushi and a sugar free red bull on performance days are pretty normal for me.)

I'm not really dieting but I sure dropped by baby weight fast. I think its all about the amount that I eat, I eat small snacky meals throughout the day. I'm fighting anemia and living with hypoglycemia so that factors into what I eat and when I eat.

Adi,

Don't avoid the thread - you know, I think we are all doing an up/down - 2 steps forward 1 step backward thing. I know I am and Lauren is because we grouse about it in emails!

I gained a pound on vaca after all. But that's fine, I'll take it off. Of course, that's one pound on the one I'd gained just prior so I am 2 pounds up from my max weight loss. I also believe it was good to rest here at this weight a bit to get a new "set point."

I've got my goal of 15 more pounds by December and I think it's doable - even if I only lose 10 by then it will be fine.

We can do it !! L et's keep refocusing and go after it!

That's not so bad, Dani! Not bad at all... though, I understand how difficult it is to get back on track after falling off the wagon...

You're right - we CAN do it!

It's good to know I"m not alone! Losing weight is tough - but I lost 54lbs several years ago... I KNOW it's possible with dedication, no matter how difficult it is.

It is strange how it requires a certain mental state to tackle it - I can certainly sympathize with you there. Thankfully, I feel as though I've found mine... hopefully it'll last!

Not being able to eat solid foods for that long must have been maddening! Do doctors prepare you for what that does to you mentally?

I can imagine how much you missed food. Sounds like you have been through a lot and you're now able to address healthy eating. I think that I had a minor minor version of that when I had gum surgery. Once I could eat again (after about 2 weeks--9 months must have royally sucked) I wanted nuts, ice cream, jelly bellies, and on and on.

Hi mish mish,
Yes the doctors prepared me. I had to go though Counseling many times, cos of the type of surgery it was before having the surgery to prepare me for what it all intakes. I was supposed to heal in 2 months. It took 6months longer becos of some complications.
Right now, I have stopped drinking all pop. I am going though some horrible withdraws. Yesturday had to get a shot from the doctors office.

The other problem is, My husband works all day long, and when he comes home at 9 pm I have to have the full course meal every night. Being that he is Arab he prefers I make him rice everyday, either with lamb, or chicken or other Arabic foods.. he hands me the food and if i do not eat with him he acts like a child and refuses to eat , I told him how the doctor said not to eat after 6 pm. If I did eat let it be a small snack. apple, plum etc. not full meals.

Last problem, He wants me fat!!!!! He said "I don't like skinny girls." how about you gain another 20 pounds it's not that bad. We fight about it all the time. He's not helping me... I have done good this week. Since my surgery I have to eat 6 times a day. This is my current eating habits..as of this week This is about 1800 calories a day.

# 7:30 a.m.—1/2 cup cooked oatmeal; one cup skim milk; one slice of whole wheat toast with one tablespoon peanut butter; one cup of blueberries
# 10 a.m.—8 ounces of non-fat yogurt with a tablespoon of walnuts or flax seeds
# 12:30 p.m.—Large spinach salad (two cups) topped with carrots, radishes, onion, cucumber and two ounces of tuna (packed in water), a teaspoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of vinegar; six whole-wheat crackers; one apple
# 3 p.m.—One cup of raw vegetables and one-quarter cup of hummus dip
# 6 p.m.—Three ounces of grilled, skinless chicken breast; one cup of brown rice; 1.5 cups of steamed broccoli; one piece of fruit
# 8 p.m.—One piece of fruit or three cups of light microwave or air popped popcorn

I have to say since I have changed my eating patterns It has really helped. Personally I feel better, I can swallow better, I am not bloated from the pop.... It is working . Lost inches more than pounds. Since my stomach isn't boated I can fit 18's some 20's right now compared to 24's 3 weeks ago.

Angelique
