Differenty
Hallo all!
Well, I should start by saying - I have no money. I also currently have *very* few performance gigs lined up. But I really, really, REALLY have a hankering to buy a new costume.
But wait! There's more!
I really fancy something... different. I can't really properly describe the reasons behind my ennui with costumes lately, and can't put my finger on what would be different-y enough. So, I'm figuring that since we're all such a geeky bunch of confirmed sparkly addicts, y'all out there could help!
So I like Egyptian costumes, and am not a big fan of Turkish style costumes. I don't like cut-outs generally - particularly not when in reality they're practically "a$$-outs". I currently own Hannan, Pharaonics, Eman and Yasser costumes... although I'm going to sell my Yassers and several of my Hannan. Yes, I am. I really AM. I am going to get round to taking the damn pictures and selling the costumes and be done with it! Gah!
I'm not into mini-skirty costumes since I am VERY short and curvy and don't have great legs. Besides, I like preserving a bit of the mystery. I tend to favour slim trumpety skirts because chiffon circles make me look like a scary merangue. I'm thinking perhaps I should go for differenty colours or use of colours/clashing colours/ pattern? <blink blink>
I'm lost. Help me find a costume style to hanker after!

Hmmmm, interesting question.
From the description of yourself above, you sound similar in shpae to me, short and curvy, as I stay away from full chiffon skirts myself.
However, what's worked for me is a full chiffon skirt on the bottom and tighter on the top, not necessarily mermaid style, (as that is my favorite)
see the NOOR skirt on dahlal's website, under egyptian skirts. That style comes with the Egyptian Empress costume, page 5 & 7 under egyptian costumes. I have it in black and silver, and it is one of my fav's never sell it costume, and extremely flattering. It's classy, elegant and you can do color combo's.
Also, the VENUS costume, which I own in the fuschia/pink on page 4.

Also, in response to your question, "different type of costume"
I think now the two costumes I referenced above are sufficiently different from all the lycra that's out and about now - and are both lovely and what the GP and I confess, myself, think of as bellydance outfits.
Oh, and they don't have as$-outs! LOL!
The Venus has some cut outs but have flesh covered mesh, and I am conservative in my costuming, and they are fine for me.

Ah, the Venus - does it work on us little short curvy people, Maria? I've found myself looking at it more than once, but I just wonder if the bra draps would make me look... Love-Handley.
Have you seen the zebra-print Eman (I assume) on the front page of the Dahlal Costumes page? It's so gorgeous ... I don't like that amount of leg on show personally (fat thighs, me!), but I LOVE the bra and I'm loving the print and the jewels...

Actually, the Venus does work on me. It looks very beautiful and is very flattering.
I was surprised myself, as I was looking at it for a while. My first one I bought on bhuz swap meet, but was a little off-fitting, so I sold, but loved it so much when I saw that fuschia pink one, I HAD to have it.
Sadiyya, the woman cook from the restaurant, it's her favorite!
It is flattering.
That zebra one! I LOVE zebra print......... LUV IT. I agree, the bra is gorgeous, but the skirt! YIKES! Way too much. I have great legs, but, NO way would I wear that.
I'm too conservative. I prefer to leave a little to the imagination.

No, I shan't step away from the computer! I demand new sparklies!
I do love me some Hannan. But... they've become a wee bit samey to me lately too. Or maybe I'm just not seeing the more innovative things because it's "mainstream" designs on websites for sale.
Wait... did I just say bellydance costumes were too MAINSTREAM?

If you are going to order a pharonics, do it now before the prices go up.
(NOT that I'm being an enabler or anything like that!

We're ALL such shameless enablers, it's a bit shocking!
Amira does do some crazy "differenty" designs that never make the mainstream catalogues, I know that. Hm. One day I'll just say "make me something. Anything. Go nuts". But... scary!
I can always tell Pharaonics, even now when she's clearly been so influenced by Eman's success. I'm thinking I need even more differenty from my other costumes.... hmmmmmm. Any hidden gem designers out there I don't know of?

WAY OT here, but I'm a curvy girl (working on letting some go) I'm not comfortable letting my belly hangover the belt so I wear dresses and the MOST beautiful one in the world was bought as I was saving my money for it. ARGGHHH. It was the Arabian Autumn by Eman on the Belly dance store sight. So sad..... It was brown and lime green with a beautiful design in the middle that was VERY figure flattering. How I wish it was mine all mine.

Oh, I HATE it when you really covet something and you put off buying it because you're being good/saving up for it/ whatever and then SOMEONE ELSE BUYS IT! Happens to me all the time.
I'd forgotten about the Bellydance store site... I was going to go geek there but I think it has music, doesn't it? Hmmm... maybe not while I'm at work then... bah.

Wigglewhiz, that's an awesome idea, just tell her to go crazy, however, I would definitely say keep away from full chiffon'y skirts.
I have a booty too, and if it's not fitted somewhat around that area, YIKES!
It flares out from my high booty and looks scary!
Like I have an 1890's bustle....
My booty is my best body part, and I like to show it off a bit!

One caveat about bellydance store, she has lovely things, and she's good at customer service, however, in my experience, three things I've ordered from her needed to be returned because she is not very good at measuring her costumes anywhere close to reality.

Ah, Maria, you're a woman after my own heart! My mum comments when I'm out wearing my L Rose trumpet skirts (as you do) or jeans and a split-back shirt: "Oh, this is your 'I have a great a$$ and I'm not afraid to show it outfit, huh?"
Oh, and a little word about differenty... I'm NOT looking for costumes that have BIRDS or parts of birds on them, dudes. Too. WEIRD. Much as I love some Emans... she's taken a big sip of the crazy juice before designing that one!

Not that I know what you have in your closet already, but if you have all bra/skirt costumes, maybe a balady dress would be a change of pace? Or something folkloric-y like a galabeya, or mesh saidi look?

I have the saucy Eman galabeya, which I love. I have the sophisticated assuit galabeya too - but sadly I think I shall never be able to wear it since the booooooooobs are like DINNER PLATES! Seriously, they are SCARY big. <sigh> But I can't bring myself to part with it in the vain hope that it's fit. Fit, dammit!
I'm thinking I need to get a nice cabaret dress, though. You know, in case I ever get asked to do another wedding. Hmmmmm... <ponder ponder>

I believe I have the same figure type as both you and Maria. I have that Venus costume, too, and it's incredible! Another really flattering costume is the Eman goth-y beledi dress with the long sleeves.

1. If you can get to see her, get Eman to design you a one off like wot I did. But I have met two dancers who weren't happy with theirs. I think the ladies are very very busy.
2. I know she's not Egyptian but look at Mandy's designs if you come to JOY . I tell you I love that black 2 piece of mine and they are so comfy to wear and she makes 'em in all shapes and sizes and never repeats and the quality/workmanship IS superb!
3. Get in touch with folks who go to Cairo a lot, They know the lesser known designers lurking there and who are a lot cheaper.
4. Don't dismiss the Turkish altogther.I love my Sim from Bhuz. Now I grant you need some height with those deep V shaped belts but the Turkish stuff at Sim and Legend comesin many designs and is beautifully made. Well what about a trip to Istanbul, last minute cheap weekend and down the designers. I'm sure Meissoun will point you in the right direction.
5.Keep watching Bhuz..I love my Sim and my just aquired Amira skirt (even if HM Customs have taken a slice outa my purse!)
Have you got that Bhuz T shirt yet? Just one more!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Sim's are fantastic on me, and they don't look like your traditional turkish, which I'm not fond of either.
