I know this may probably be veering the discussion to a different territory and for that I apologize, but before we judge other countries as 'corrupt,' we should continue to be mindful of our countries' involvement in those regions of the world (i.e. the United States and Canada) and the foreign policies that are in place which facilitate the continuation of exploitation.

Also, we have to ask the question, who does the US provide social security, insurance, education etc. to? And at what cost? In the 'west,' there are still hierarchies in place where some benefit, while others remain at the bottom.

I do think that it is extremely important that we are having this discussion and being mindful about things such as where our costumes and hip scarves come from. It's such a tricky situation for me personally because to boycott means to put an end to the services that these people get paid for (while still being exploited) and subsequently putting them out of a job, however to continue to purchase these items means continuing the circle of exploitation. It's like a catch-22 sometimes...Sigh.

Just some thoughts...

that's the one i feel worst about. i've been importing a LOT of stuff lately, mostly for my troupe, but also some personal items. and they all got shipped half around the world... doesnt quite tie in with my effort to only eat local food cause of the food miles...

but well, there is not really an alternative, with most of the stuff i bought, nobody makes it around here. even if i would buy them locally, they'd come from the same place.

i do try to not sell costumes second hand to the US, and want to sell them locally. have been guilty of buying them though.
