Nailpolish on rhinestone trim?

I have heard people talk about putting clear nailpolish on the small rhinestone trim (not the large crystals) on costumes to keep the prongs from catching things.

Does it work? Does it dull the sparkle? Does it yellow or dull over time? Is it advisable? Thanks for any thoughts.

I have never tried it, but I might. Sounds like a good idea.

I have a "junk" costume that I may try it on to see what happens but thought someone may already have tried it and could let us know the results.

Good thought. What about getting some really high-shine topcoat???

I have a question-I want a large quantity of rhinestone trim to make a costume, but I don't want to spend $19.99 a yard at Jo-Anns. Does anyone care to share their sources?

I have covered an entire bra and belt that had a lot of stones and prongs with about 5 coats of clear nail polish and after a year it is still bright and shiny. I did a test on a small part of the costume before I put so much polish. My costume no longer snags on anything. The type of costume was a heavily sequin rhinestone Turkish costume from Turquoise International.

Yes. I went over the costume to make sure all the prongs were pushed down then used the polish.

Do you get the 40% (and sometimes 50%) coupons? Definitely helps when you need a yard or two and don't want to wait for something to arrive in the mail.

I'll let others respond about online sources as I haven't (yet) ordered rhinestone trim online.

I bought some from here:

thought the price was really reasonable for the quantity. But you must buy in quantity...that's the catch.

There are some good vendors on ebay that yardage of rhinestone chain. I don't remember names at the moment, but they look really nice. I think some are swarovski...
