enlighten me, what is so great about this?

I'm not meaning to be snarky but jeez, THAT MUCH for a scarf? Ok I understand it's designer even though this is the first time I've ever heard of him but wow it's such a simple thing!!

http://www.yoox.com/item.asp?cod10=46041326&TP=2176

I found other scarves by the same designer for even more than that, they had skulls all over them. It's the ugliest scarf (foot in mouth if anyone owns one). Seriously would anyone be able to tell the difference between this and a printed scarf in China (other than a tag).

And some other names like Fendi or Hermes ..scarves up to one thousand dollars?

Who wears these?

Just wondering..is this just a rich people thing?

Like buying dance costumes?

How many of us actually tell non-dancers what our costumes are worth?

Reminds me of the old saying "More money than brains".
If people aren't sure what to do with their money they could always donate it to the SABD fund. SABD? Save A Belly Dancer. lol All donations gratefully accepted and all donations over $2.00 are tax deductable. Buy a SABD pen, only $100.

You pay for the exclusivity, I guess - the ability to show that you are so ridiculously wealthy/devoted to the Great Goddess Fashion that you can afford a limited edition scarf that costs $500 or whatever, or a deliberately foul bag that is so directional and recogniseable that you can never carry it for more than one season, for several thousand. It's really rather vile.

Much as I adore World, I got a bit snippy with Francis Hooper when he said it was really bad to wear shoes from Number 1 Shoe Warehouse. Dude, some of those shoes are superb! And $30!

I don't get it... the scarf is rather crappy looking. Definitely not worth it.

I have Hermes, Prada, Gucci. Some are real. Some are fake. I like the quality and hte designs (My Hermes scarf is a skating party. it was from Christmas 1993)

And yes, sometimes it's about having something which is exclusive. Sometimes it's about having something which is really great quality. I ahve a Prada bag which retialed for almost $900 (I think I paid $200) which is not only top grade leather, but was hand stitched, knotted, etc. I know this baby isn't going to fall apart. AND it is gaurenteed. If there is EVER a problem, I take it back and they will repair it for free.

Now, the scarf meantioned? Not sure about that one. I THINK Alex McQueen is supposed to be a hot designer, but. . .

Alexander McQueen is a young British designer who was the house designer for Givenchy at one point. So he does have a name.
Personally, I'd rather have an Akai (or two). :)

I remember someone at a dinner party this summer flipping over my Gucci scarf. Little did they know it only cost 1.5 euros at a street market in Paris.

As far as the quality of designer goods...they really have been going down--there's an NYTimes article that came out recently about that, but I can't find it at the second

in the meantime, there's another article about the H&M phenomenon and it's relationship to knockoffs

maybe the scarf would be worth it if it was made of real dragons :)

even if i had the $, i don't think i would shell out for full retail high end designer stuff. maybe i'm cheap, but i'd rather put $900 in a retirement acct than on my feet or around my neck.

i do. "it's hand sewn and beaded, these are glass beads and swarowskis' and it costs a 1000 dollars". i have no problems with saying that. when there jaw hits the floor i just repeat "this is all sewn by hand", and i let them see the pattern up closer...

Maybe he grew the silkworms himself :-)
I didn't see what he sold them for as they are now sold out.
A $1000 costume has a hell of a lot more work and detail involved.

The designer - Alexander McQueen - is a very big name - if you go to the store and see it in person, the material will be 1000's of times nicer than anything you can get.
That being said, even if I was rich, I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a scarf.
You can get gorgeous ones at Nordstrom for around $100.

Hopefully, the silk is handspun and the dragon hand embroidered, too! Ha, ha!

I think when some people start mixing in certain circles their sense of reality goes kerplunk! I was thinking that when I was watching Oprah one time ... she who I generally admire 'cos she's usually all for supporting the poor and disenfranchised, having come from a poor background herself. She admonished the audience that you can't get a supportive bra for $10. Umm, Target bras are pretty much the same thing as the Vicky's Secret ones at a fraction of the price! (Yeah, I know they probably come from China, but the point is they are available).

Another time she was talking about bed linens and how it's not only necessary to buy new pillows etc. on a regular basis, but she likes her sheets changed every two days for that crisp, fresh feeling (while making the point it was a good, hygienic habit to get into). Wake up Oprah ... remember the days when buying new pillows didn't override the need for groceries, and you didn't have a maid and were too busy trying to keep up with work and chores to have time to change bed sheets every two days?

YEP. and in a time where environmental conservation is a HUGE issue it just irks me that celebs love to drive petrol guzzling cars (and more than just one) who need a 4 wheel drive in the city, australians are not immune either. and the fashion industry is a major enviro disaster using synthetics particularly petroleum products, just the sheer volume of chemicals required is scary. don't even get me started on the tobbacco industry. the other day i watched a memorial for a football star who recently died here and the did the old release the balloons into the air thing. WTF, weren't the white pidgeons enough those poor sea animals will only suffer.

sorry a bit off topic to OP.
