vintage makeup to go with vintage costume?
If you were trying to represent a dancer of the 40s or 50s, would you try to match the makeup to the costume?
I'm thinking about doing something like that for a spoofla, but I haven't the foggiest idea where to start researching how to do makeup of the 40s or 50s. Even my standard web references (like www.costumes.org) weren't much help.
Any ideas?

Kevin Aucoin's "Making Faces" book covers retro glam Hollywood starlet looks. I would also suggest watching videos of the star you were most trying to emulate to pick up on certain things like how she lined her lips. (Naima Akef comes to mind as one who had almost a 30's era bee-stung look - the kind where the lips are drawn INSIDE the natural lipline so that the lips look like they are in a permanent pucker)

definitely watch old movies from that era. drawn on severe eyebrows, puckered lips - heavy eyeliner, red lips are what comes to mind. .

As per my grandmother who grew up in the 40's and 50's, she said it was matte all the way with heavy lipstick, blush and thick eyebrows.
Hope that helps.

Somebody say vintage?
There's another book by Kevin Aucoin called "Face Forward" that is also really good.
There's a makeup book called "Vintage Face"; one of the authors is Daniella Turudich, who also did some nice books on vintage hairstyles of various periods (I have the 1940s one and I love it). Unfortunately her books are, as far as I know, all out of print but still in high demand, so if you try to buy them used from Amazon you will pay an arm and a leg. eBay is worth a try.
Several websites that cater to swing dancers also have vintage makeup advice. Here's some; there's more:

http://www.return2style.de/amimakup.htm
http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=3198
I love projects like this. I hope you have a lot of fun.

God yes, you MUST do it. It's quite easy. Matte foundation (no blush), red lips, pencilled brows and "doe" eyes - and if you want those eyes period, you will shadow the lid in *blue* or *green*.

Definitely Besame Cosmetics! Also, they really didn't have colored eyeshadow in the 40s so go for Besame's "Black Pearl" Eyeshadow.

I *really* like this look, with how-tos, from the cover of the last Sephora catalog:

Oh, look, my daily makeup from when I still used to be bothered! I love that look so much.

I'll report in on how much I love the lipstick when it arrives.
Also ordered the pressed powder compact.

a couple of great vintage reds from MAC:
Russian Red lipstick and
Dubbonet lipstick
Russian red is super 1950's style red - this would work for anyone i think
Dubbonet is a deep dark wine red - not good for anyone without olive undertone in skin.

Actually I wear Dubonnet pretty often, and I'm not at all olive--it was picked out for me as a good red by a MAC artist. It's also not that dark on me, it's what I think of as my bright red. My skin has a tendency to change the color of lipsticks though. MAC describes it as "deepened claret," whatever exactly that means

That's cool that dubonnet works for you! On me it's r-e-a-l-l-y dark, it's my favorite lipstick for performance actually.....I'm on my 19th tube of it, at least!
I wear russian red on stage.....

I wear Russian Red as standard and have done since, oooh, must have been 1992 or 3? Whenever it was launched in the UK. I used to wear a Shiseido red (Scarlet Moon) but they discontinued it; once I'd used every one I ever managed to buy up, I had a disconsolate couple of years in the UK using various reds that didn't really do it for me, till MAC was launched in London and Russian Red, in particular, was getting promoted because Madonna wore it for her Blonde Ambition tour. It's superb and I adore it, though I do sometimes wear MAC Red on stage (a friend gave me some) because it is a little brighter.

Ruby woo by MAC is the color that many hollywood makeup artists use when doing late 40's early 50's work. It is both bright and dark. super matte and really stays put. You can also smudge just a bit on the apples of your cheeks, thats what the saucy "loose" women did.
