Fatme Serhan- Costuming?
So, I guess if I were to dance to a Fatme Serhan baladi song, I would need to wear a baladi dress? Or would other garments be acceptable as well?

I've worn baladi dresses to dance to Fatme - it just felt right to me. BUT she was Dina's singer for years, and Dina wore whatever she wore, so I'm certain it's not a hard-and-fast rule!

I think you could wear either a baladi dress or a bedleh, whichever the music inspires you to wear. Dina certainly wore some skin-baring fashion statements when using her music.

Ala Warag Il Foull :)
BTW, do you know where I could find some info on Fatme? I've done internet searches and never come up with anything other than song lists.

I don't know much about that song, but it has a definite folksy feel, doesn't it?
Hmm, I'm sure I read a short article about Fatme once but I don't remember where. Hasn't she started wearing Hijab and singing only religious songs now?

Eva, I couldn't find a clip of Dina dancing to Fatme's version of this - though I'm certain she did, because it's on Fatme's "best of Saidi" CD which is the soundtrack for Dina's "Monte Carlo" show.
But here's Dina dancing to some speeded-up version of the song (NOT Fatme). I definitely have the impression that you're free to wear whatever you like for this one. Although...hmmmm...this is a dress....and for Dina, it's fairly conservative, even....

she sang for nagwa fouad before dina. i'm not home now, but i have on dvd fatme singing for nagwa and her troupe at the holliday inn [i believe] doing "ya omda" it is so awesome and funny and great. [yeah, i'm a fan]. and that was definitely a "dress song". but that doesn't mean all her music is a "dress song".
imo: you could probably wear a bedla if you like for Ala Warag Il Foull, but it just kinda sounds like a "dress song" to me. but that all depends on whether it is the only song in your set or if it will be next to other types of songs and if you have a costume change time or not.
that probably is not too helpful, but gives one more vote for wearing 1 or 2 piece costume.

I didn't know she sang for Nagwa! I'm a big Fatme fan, I'd love to know more about her.
BTW, I didn't mean to imply above that I normally follow Dina in matters of costuming.

Oh yes Lauren, I could just imagine you in a Dina costume. EEEP!!! It would certainly make one afraid to even move, let alone dance.

I found this posting where someone was nice enough to relay the "Queen of Baladi" CD liner notes for each song, which is somewhat helpful, but still, not nearly enough information for conveying the mood of the song well.
Ala warrag il foull- "With the leaf of a carnation he spoiled me. I can't take it any more."
I guess she is sad because he wooed her, then left her. Or, does it mean she has been spoiled and needs this kind of attention all the time. Or...?

I don't think it's a sad song...I think she's all hot and bothered about the guy (as in Tahtil Shubbak). I'd have to have my BF sit down with me and translate, but as I recall, it's one of those pining/infatuation type of songs.

Ok, so, this is off-topic here a little, and I know what I am about to say will probably be considered blaspheme to many, but I cannot stand that drunken-sailor-falling-forward thing Dina does all the time. Drives me crazy.
Is she drunk, or is that her way of emoting an "I'm going to collapse from my sadness/emotion" kind of thing?

Well, whaddya know?!
Translation to Al warag al Foll - Belly Dance Forum
I'm still pretty sure the mood is light and even a bit lusty.
Side note: Beware the painfully literal translations, like the one of Tahtil Shubbak that's floating around. It's helpful to sit down with an Arabic speaker and just have them explain the figurative meaning of the song.

Dr. Mo Geddawi calls this a broken Arabesque. It drove me crazy until I saw it in person, and then it made sense.

Oooo! Watching that move with that name (broken Arabesque) in mind, it does start to make a bit more sense...

Haha, we'll see that in your next video! I think it's charming. She looks out of control, but she's totally centered and in control, all the time.

Love that song.
At some point I wanted to choreograph it and was going to use an Eman Gallabiya for costuming. So - sexy gallabiya.
