Zaar and the hair piece...Is it a no win situation??

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has done a zaar or zaar like movements in a performance while wearing a hair piece? Have you done it in a full wig, fall or ponytail hair piece?

I usually wear a fall (hair piece) in my performances because my hair barely touches my shoulders and it looks full than my own. (Adding to the mystique of a belly dancer )

There's a routine I would like to perform that does involve zaar like head movements and I was thinking about wear some sort of hair piece. I have thought about getting a hair weave BUT if any of you have ever had hair weaved into your own...you know how expensive it can be to get a really good one, maintenance, etc. Don't want to go to the weave route yet if I don't have to

I don't know how she does it but I've seen Jillina do hair flips and other zaar like movements in a hair piece. Of course, she's Jillina and she can do anything!

I used to wear a 3/4 fall but never had the courage to do hair flips with it on.

Ditto on the hair clips. I do hair tosses all the time with that kind of ponytail in. Haven;t tried it with a fall, but working on it.

I think I've done it all except full wig: 3/4 cap, banana clip ponytail fall, braided-in extensions and glued-in (temporary) extensions.

if you're doing a big show and feel like spending the $$, glued-in is awesome. I go to the braiding supply store in the 'hood and get some wefts of hair and pay my hair gal to install them. once I had them done with water soluable glue so they lasted 2 days, the last time I did a stronger glue and they looked good for almost a week. me working the glued-ins:

full wig is not so secure on me, so I personally wouldn't try it.

3/4 cap - I sew extra wig comb clips onto my wigs above my temples and at the nape. I have a smallish head so I find if I pull in the sides a pinch, overlap and sew them it makes the cap nice and tight on my head - that helps for the security. here's a pic of me working a 3/4 cap (same choreo, same photographer, different event and costume!):

banana clips are totally secure on me. I do two stubby ponytails one above the other to anchor it to, and that thing isn't going anywhere. BUT I think ponytails sometimes look a little dorky on me when I flip them around. but I do it anyway.

my hair is too thin and fine to do more permanent extensions. I did them once and I lost a quarter of my already thinning hair when I took them out. :( they move so much more naturally than hairpieces do.

I sometimes dance in a hair piece (pony tail) and I put in about 20 large hair pins just to be on the safe side. So far, stayed on, hair flips and all.

I dance at least half the time in a fall...I toss my hair a lot...
My hair dresser taught me to put my hair up using criss-crossed hair pins, which then get 'caught' in the net of the wig cap and add extra security before you pin to the head...also criss-cross the pins as you put them in (one going right, the other overlapping to the left).
Then REHEARSE with it at home...try to shake it loose...see if you can. If you can't...you're good to go!

Thank you all sooooo much for your input

elisagamal, those pictures look great!!! I will definitely look into the extra wig combs and gluing pieces in. My hair is also thin and fine and I worry about dealing with the after math of sewed in extensions!

Gia al Qamar, I will definitely try the criss-cross with the pins and practice, practice, practice!!!

emma-bessa, I never heard of those but I definitely want to look into those.

Thank you to those who mentioned wearing a pony tail. I haven't tried that one yet but we shall see

omg thank you for posting this! I've been asking this question of my friend but since she has long hair, she didn't have much to say on it. I have really short hair (I work from home....'nuff said) but I wanted to do some of the movements and wondered about how to do it in a piece. Thank you so much for all your help! See, never be afraid to ask a question! You never know *who* is also asking it! :D

Mona Said wore a full wig, including in the one from the video with Hanan and Nelly- the one I refer to as the "solid gold drum solo" in the gold outfit. She's hair flipping all the time in that and did that night after night at her club (don't remember if that was in Paris or London).

A former dance teacher showed the video in class and she said that was a wig too. I couldn't believe it was a wig because - it stayed on sooooo well. I've watched the video on Bhuz and now I'm gonna have to watch it again.

SamiraShuruk, I believe you!!!

for the record, these are the wig comb clips i'm talking about. they're also fantastic to sew to the inside of your hairbands to keep them on during all of that hair tossing.
