In other words, if you like what someone has on their site, the courteous thing to do is to "thank" them by sending other people to that site. As the owner of a popular belly dance web site myself (shira.net) I feel distressed if people post an entire article from my site into a forum message because it robs me of having the readers visit my site to see the article and see what else I have to offer.
I never thought of that Shira. Thanks for the insight. I'll change how I present information for people from now on. Thank you!

I guess it is definitely helpful to have the link; come to think of it, I usually click the link regardless so I can check sources!

Are you all aware that I "did" post a link in my original message that takes you to the source website? I'd highly recommend clicking it. It won't try to sell you anything, I promise! It's the Skinny Science Research Institute. They're is a ton more information about the diet sodas story, and a lot more information that might help you understand how your body works when it stores fat.

I did see it; I thought maybe you added it after the fact, since I've just now seen this thread...that's partly why I didn't understand the fuss! I think you did just fine; you posted the text for those who might be too "lazy" to click on a link, and you posted the link for those who want more info

Just my opinion, but the name "Skinny Science Research Institute" doesn't exactly reek of credibility.

CEPHALIC BRAIN RESPONSE
WHY DIET SODAS ARE FATTENING

For as long as humans have lived on Earth, they have been eating foods that taste sweet, such as sugar cane and honey.

So, the brain has a conditioned response in reaction to eating something sweet.

It is called the Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR), and it’s responsible for the fat-storing effects of diet beverages, including diet sodas, diet tea, coffee, energy drinks, sports drinks, and flavored waters.

This adaptation in humans is a reaction to the ingestion of sweet-tasting foods. The body learned to associate sweet-taste on the tongue with the resulting sugar-energy-load that landed in the stomach.

The brain came to perceive sweet-taste with the need to program the liver to
prepare for the arrival of an outside source of high energy – sugar.

As the tongue senses something sweet, it programs the brain to set into motion a series of biochemical events. It doesn’t matter if the sweet taste comes from natural honey or from artificial sweeteners.

This biochemical cascade triggers the liver to stop the manufacture of protein and starch from its body-reserves, and to begin to store the glucose-energy that circulates in the blood.

In the case of diet beverages, the sweet taste sets these events into motion.

But when no calories actually appear in the stomach, this causes the body to demand real food, with resulting hyper-urges from the liver to overeat, or to drink more of the sweet-tasting liquid, and the cascade repeats itself.

Almost instantly, the body starts producing insulin, the “fat” hormone, which stores sugar in the blood stream, and programs the adipose tissue fat cells (belly fat) to store, store, store.

This Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR) creates reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which further triggers strong cravings for more sweet-tasting items, and high glycemic foods.

After the taste buds are activated by a sweet-taste, the urge to ingest food can last from 1 to 2 hours. So, you are hungry for hours, because no real food or calories has satiated the body’s need for energy.

And now, the body is producing insulin for no reason, because the brain has instructed the liver to store instead of burn/release its storage supplies.

The result is fat, fat, fatter - the Cephalic Fat Spiral.

This person is spot on. Above joke aside, I think this is a valid point about diet drinks. It is a fitness issue. And this is exactly what happens when you drink too much diet cola..etc.

You know, I kinda feel the same way, but the scientists that run the thing truly are the most credible scientists in that field. I agree with you though. I just can't exactly change it. :) LOL!

I do know lostboy/enigmahealth from my days in Chicago and while I repsect you as a photog, I have to repectfully disagree with you posting infomation that like this. I am a registered dietitian and I would like to offer a bit of perspective on this topic.

The "Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR)" has little to do with diet soda and more to do with an individual's body reponse to eating. The research compiled on this topic is inconsistant and shows very little significance in linking CPIR to overeating in healthy individuals. You can vew articles on this topics from as far back as 1985 on the web and find no evidence of their being a direct link between soda and CPIR.
Cephalic phase secretions are associated with the sight, smell, and taste of food, as opposed to its postingestional consequences. Drinking the diet soda is unlikely to cause the reponse as opposed to smelling a steak or licking an ice cream cone.
Could the company you are working for will provide peer-reviewed journal research papers indicating the direct link?
The link to insulin reponse is complicated and most places that this topic is dicussed is on message boards that also tout fad diets like the Atkins diet, the zone diet and even worse....the grapefruit diet.

Eat all foods in moderation, increase your intake of whole grains, fruits and vegetables and live a happy life without the assistance of someone's "supplements" herbs and the like.

Re: Diet Sodas Are Fattening?!

HI everyone!

Tipsuda here. I think Enigmahealth "has left the Bhuz building" since I can't access the public profile. Engimahealth if you are still browsing, maybe it's better if you post these clips as blogs on your public profile & just make a brief announcement on the forum boards

I have to research a little more on cephalic phase insulin respone, but in case bhuzers are interested, cephalic phase is when the brain responds to sight, smell, thought of food & the stomach responds to this stimulus by producing acid to prepare for digestion.

I don't completely agree with this hypothesis since insulin secretion from the pancreas is stimulated by the amount of glucose in the blood stream after a meal. So a diet soda, since it has no calories from carb's, should not contribute to a reactive hyperglycemia by making one crave for more sugary foods.

If one is not taking in enough calories (diets, etc), the body will naturally crave for more food (calories) because we all need calories to convert to energy so we can move, think & breath.

So, diet/eating health issues should be consulted with a physician, dietician, etc. as I think all Bhuzzers are (should be) aware already

I think the most important thing to take away form this thread is to maintain your health, diet, & body so that we can live longer & healthier and dance longer & healthier

NOW! who wants to go with me to get a butter burger from Culver's!!!!!!!!!

Re: Diet Sodas Are Fattening?!

did you all see that this exact topic was posted as the home page news of Yahoo! yesterday? apparently some other scientists support the idea too...can't seem to find their articles once they've been rotated, or I'd post the link... :/
