Diet Sodas Are Fattening?!

CEPHALIC BRAIN RESPONSE
WHY DIET SODAS ARE FATTENING

For as long as humans have lived on Earth, they have been eating foods that taste sweet, such as sugar cane and honey.

So, the brain has a conditioned response in reaction to eating something sweet.

It is called the Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR), and it’s responsible for the fat-storing effects of diet beverages, including diet sodas, diet tea, coffee, energy drinks, sports drinks, and flavored waters.

This adaptation in humans is a reaction to the ingestion of sweet-tasting foods. The body learned to associate sweet-taste on the tongue with the resulting sugar-energy-load that landed in the stomach.

The brain came to perceive sweet-taste with the need to program the liver to
prepare for the arrival of an outside source of high energy – sugar.

As the tongue senses something sweet, it programs the brain to set into motion a series of biochemical events. It doesn’t matter if the sweet taste comes from natural honey or from artificial sweeteners.

This biochemical cascade triggers the liver to stop the manufacture of protein and starch from its body-reserves, and to begin to store the glucose-energy that circulates in the blood.

In the case of diet beverages, the sweet taste sets these events into motion.

But when no calories actually appear in the stomach, this causes the body to demand real food, with resulting hyper-urges from the liver to overeat, or to drink more of the sweet-tasting liquid, and the cascade repeats itself.

Almost instantly, the body starts producing insulin, the “fat” hormone, which stores sugar in the blood stream, and programs the adipose tissue fat cells (belly fat) to store, store, store.

This Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR) creates reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which further triggers strong cravings for more sweet-tasting items, and high glycemic foods.

After the taste buds are activated by a sweet-taste, the urge to ingest food can last from 1 to 2 hours. So, you are hungry for hours, because no real food or calories has satiated the body’s need for energy.

And now, the body is producing insulin for no reason, because the brain has instructed the liver to store instead of burn/release its storage supplies.

The result is fat, fat, fatter - the Cephalic Fat Spiral.

If my post violates any terms of service, I'm sorry, but I don't see how this is spam? I'm not trying to sell anything with this post. The information was provided from a site that holds useful scientific information about health and weight loss, and I posted it in the fitness category. The link I provided doesn't sell any products of any kind. I was trying to be helpful, but if I've upset anyone, I appologize.

I found this very interesting. My doctor had told me to stay away from any "diet" stuff, especially sodas, so I knew the stuff they put in the diet sodas was bad, now I know why.

Thank you!

Well, I don't think this is spam. I find this information interesting and new to me. It is right in line with the way I have been eating lately and I have lost weight and feel much healthier. I have a metabolic issue that makes it better for me to refrain from ALL sweeteners, be they honey, agave, etc., sugar, or artificial. So to me this is worth reading, not spam.

But I can see why people might think it not directly related to belly dance and because the poster is new they assume it is spam.

Okay, I just looked at Enigmahealth's profile and he is a little confused about what we do here on Bhuz. We aren't here to network our home based businesses. You would do better to hang out here awhile and share about yourself and not just about the products you are selling. So I guess it is spam, after all, but I did find it interesting.

And there's the fact that his/her join date is Nov 2007. Interesting or not, I don't want the boards littered with non-dance shtuff (interesting or not).

I never drink soda.I was always the odd kid who had to have juice or water. I still won't touch the stuff diet or otherwise, if it were the last beverage on earth. Interesting facts about diet soda. i think this post should go in " off topic"

Enigma - I don't think you are trying to "spam" us with your info, but you must understand something... Bhuz is a forum for dancers. According to your profile, you are not a dancer, you are a merchant, and you seem to have no connection to the bellydance community. And although you may feel that you are helping people with your advice, some people on this board may feel like they are waiting "for the other shoe to drop" (so to speak). In other words, your posts sound like they are leading up to you trying to sell us something. I agree with what Dunyah said... You should just hang out here for a while and let us "get to know you". We, here on Bhuz, have been spammed alot in the past and do not appreciate it. If you have things to better our dance community, we don't mind hearing about it... in the correct context or forum.

I promise you, I will never spam this board. I do have information about my business in my profile, but that is only for someone who wants to read my profile on their own. I am truly here to try to help people.

I'm friends with numerous dancers in the Chicago community, which is why I know about Bhuz.

I know this board is about belly dance, but this specific forum is about "fitness", and so I thought my post was appropriate here.

I think I'll just leave anyway.

this doesn't meet the definition of spam, the person came back and clarified when someone mentioned something, then went further and explained the connection.

You know, most of the people who we perform for are NOT bellydancers and might like to learn more about an art that they appreciate.

I'm a bit surprised by the hostility aimed at enigmahealth. We've actually talked about the health dangers of diet sodas here on bhuz before. If this message had been posted by an established bhuzzer such as Lauren, this thread would have probably provoked some discussion of the message's contents. The message did not contain any advertisements for products.

Enigmahealth, if you're still on the board and still reading this thread, I apologize for the chilly reception you've received. Welcome to bhuz, and I hope you'll enjoy discussing dance with us too! In the meantime, thanks for posting the article - I think it's important for people who drink diet sodas to understand that even alleged zero-calorie sweet drinks can be fattening!

I think the problem is that enigmahealth was NOT discussing anything. He/she copied and pasted something from another source, and that was the entirety of the post. IMO this is the kind of thing that happens alot on really junky discussion boards and not something I would like to see on bhuz.

Thank you. And the source leads to a web site that sells "products." To me, that is spam.

Hey, now...don't bring me into this!

The difference is
• I do post primarily about dance & dance-related topics
• I don't primarily use Bhuz to give lectures and try to establish myself as an 'expert' in a field in which I sell products
• I don't post links to pseudo-science articles on websites associated with product sales. I'm VERY careful about my sources when I do link to articles

I'm here to discuss dance, everything else is an aside.

This person is also a personal friend of mine that I met threw the belly dance community in Chicago a few years back. I found this information helpful and Interesting to read. I am all about weight loss, and learning about helpful tips to improve my health.

Here is the link when I had posted about Diet Sodas in October of this year.

I think what put me off on this post and made me think spam was that there was no personalization. No "Hi guys, I'm a friend of several Chicago dancers, and I'm looking forward to contributing to Bhuz. I thought you might find this article helpful." Like ssipes, I have seen posts that strongly resembled the OP on many boards that were indeed nothing but spam. I understand that this may not be the case here, but I have to admit it's the first thing that came to my mind. If it walks like a duck and quacks like I duck, I don't think anyone should be surprised if I think it's a duck.

I think Lauren (there I go, dragging you in again!) was the one who brought up a while ago that a message board community is like a party. If you've never met any of the guests before, You just don't barge in and start talking about yourself or your interests without taking a moment to introduce yourself and maybe have a little give-and-take conversation before getting up on your soapbox.

This post must be broken into 2 replies.

I've been asked not to leave by a couple of people, and I see in this thread that a handful of people found my info useful. So I'll stick around at least for a while. I had already asked Rosie to delete my profile. If she doesn't I'll stick around for at least a while, and see if the negativity continues.

Thanks for your insight Gwyncara, and Dunyah. I've been a member of Bhuz in the past, and I left, because of behavior like I see in this thread. I thought I'd give it another try. I'd like to point out 1 thing, that Bhuz must be for more than dancers, for the mere fact that I can select "merchant" or "fan", right? I gave my profile the name "enigmahealth" because I thought the members of this board might be more receptive to my posts about heatlh if I did that. Boy was I wrong! I didn't post a "get to know you" because Bhuz has a format like MySpace, and on MySpace, you get to know someone by reading their profile. I obviously erred. My appologies to everyone. I thought that my "get to know you" on my profile was pretty personal since I told total strangers about personal health challenges I face, but if not, here is another version.

My name is Rich Nagle. Somtimes known as Lostboy, or as Night Owl Photography. I've been friends with many of the dancers in Chicagoland/Milwaukee for about 4 years I think? A few dancers I've known much longer. I was once a regular at just about every hafla or show, but now I only make it to a show every once in a while. I used to post photo albums of those shows for people here on Bhuz. I've done studio work for some of the dancers in the region, and I even see some of those photos in profiles here on Bhuz. I own a dumbeck and bones, and "try" to play each, although I kinda suck at both. I've walked in a parade once with a belly dance troup (in swashbuckler garb), matching my bones rhythm to the beat of the their zils. The last show that I saw was a rockin show called Helping Hips, an AIDS benefit show in Chicago.

Yeah, I sell nutritional supplements too. And if someone sees my profile and asks me about them, I'll share them. If Bhuz didn't have a "fitness" category, I never would have tried to bring my assistance here, because I know it would have been inappropriate. Even so, I said I wouldn't post spam on this forum, and I meant it. In the past, people knew I did pictures, because
