high quality veils, help? Zorba, anyone?

Hi there,

My teacher is working on a veil peice for our adv. intermediate class for our summer hafla. We have a costume that we would like to wear, a sharifwear gypsy set, black skirt with red insets, red gypsy top, red pallette scarf. We were looking to get a black veil as well as a red veil, possibly making it into a double veil peice.

One of the girls in our class has a really pretty veil that moves amazingly, as far as i know the only person who makes veils of that quality is jessina from akai silks. So we were all hoping to get one from her, with the order coming to about ten black veils and ten red ones, amking for an order of twenty.

I emailed jessina last night about it, but was looking for some back up vendors just incase shes too busy to make them in tiem, our show will be in approx eight weeks, we are based in alberta canada.

So does anyone know of some other veils vendors with high quality veils. I would love to get them from akai, but this is just in case.

Zorba, i know your a veil expert, i've been to your site and found some good links but was hoping for your thoughts. Or anyone elses.

L Rose makes silk veils as well--they are located in Northern California. I haven't used them, but I know other Bhuzzers have.

"Expert" may be a bit much, but L.Rose makes great veils too - although they're slightly heavier than A'Kai. I've seen other veils as light as A'Kai - generally speaking they're not quite as pretty and/or the colors aren't quite as brilliant (as an A'Kai). OTOH, red and black are pretty hard to screw up, YMMV.

If you're getting half circles for double veil, hem the top (straight) edge! If this is the first time for some to do double veil with silk, be prepared to re-learn technique. Slow down and drop the power level; silk won't tolerate it. If its the first time for some to do double veil period - do it with tissue lame' or organza. Double veil is hard enough to learn without the added frustrations of doing it with silk.

Tigerb here on bhuz dyes silk veils- there are some beauts in her gallery... And I may possibly be misremembering, but I think ssipes dyes silk too.

I love my Shibori Borealis veils. She uses a very intricate technique to get extraordinary designs. They really stand out among the crowd, and the quality is fantastic. She has a little explanation on her ebay store about the different weights of silk.

Well, I'm an L.Rose silk veil addict - her silk veils come in two weights, "China Silk" and the silk she uses for her tie-dyed veils and it's much lighter and I think for double veil you'd want the lighter weight. Quality of fabric is excellent - really floats but even her lighter weight silk is not as fragile as others I've seen, but I don't have an Akai silk veil so can't compare the two.
Here's a tip - for double veil, try getting 2-7/8 yard circle veils instead of two 3 yard ones - it's a lot of fabric to deal with and makes a big difference to have them just slightly under 3 yards. a 2-7/8 circle veil is still big enough to use as a single veil too. That was advice to me straight from Lora of L.Rose and I'm glad I followed it - it's enough to deal with technical issues of double veil work without added length that's not really needed, unless dancer is over 5'10"! I'm 5'4" and 2-7/8 is plenty veil for me!

Veighouda, I've been dying silk for almost 10 yrs, though only recently to sell. I use 6mm silk because its what I like. Not the lightest weight but it moves best IMO. I don't have any Akai veils so I can't compare the the silk. But my veils, especially after handling, are very buttery and move well. Several bhuzzers have been happy with the veils I have made them. She does fantastic work with solid colors (I'm not sure if she does others) ..she just had a new baby so she may or may not be accepting new orders but I highly recommend her work

as for the rest of us I think we like to make the busy intricate ones :) (but on occasion someone will slip me some cough medicine and I do mellow soft ombres too :)
