Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
I couldn't honestly see myself putting something, let alone paying for, something that comes along with my Hefty bags and Wonder Bread.

Well, these are fabric-covered wires that you can twist, apparently. Very clever.

Thank you for being the brave one and bringing that up, I really wanted to say something but held back. Couldn't they have come up with a better name? Trash ties?! I guess it's cute for preteens...

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
Um...I'm 36 and I TOTALLY want them. Hair is an accessory, real or fake, just like a veil or earrings. These are a boon for stylists and those who futz with their hair.

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
I can see that stylists would use these because they are easy to put in and take out while styling hair, or maybe to create some kind of curl or design...

I wonder if you can still get coloured pipecleaners? Because those would totally work in exactly the same manner.

Me too and they will be designed so that unlike elastic bands and plastic bag ties, they don't damage your hair.
I hope they are strong for the wayward mop like wot I own!
I'll give 'em a try. Thanks for that limk and the name...makes you look doesn't it!

I like the name...I think it's funny and I'm 47. Also I love the designer who came up with them. She designs fabric as well. very talented. her crafting blog is here.
RE: pipecleaners - yeah, could work. I suspect the only downside would be the fuzz would get in your hair. But they could look really cute!

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
I ordered them but based on Zumarrad's comment, I thought of a way to make them out of pipe cleaners.
You probably can't use pipe cleaners because there is just enough twisted metal exposed that it would grab and pull your hair (it would mine because my hair texture is very fine).
If I was going to attempt to make my own, I'd probably try the following using pipe cleaners -
1/4" binding - cut an appropriate length - fold it in half - stitch it up down the long end and across one short end - insert pipe cleaner - sew up the open end - voila.
If that works - you can make your own binding by using a very easy tool from notion maker Clover (sold at all joanns and all sewing stores) - you can buy them to make any width. I also bought gold, silver, and red lame binding recently.

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
Of course you can. You can even get ones that have metalic/shiny fibers in them too. You can find them in craft stores (or craft sections of stores) and they will probably be in the section for children's crafts. I believe that they come in the standard skinny pipecleaner size and a bulkier size too.

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
You could probably get some hollow cord and shove the pipecleaner through it and tie off the ends, like the manufacturer did.

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
I personally do not hold anything against anyone making a buck from a clever idea - whether or not one of us can make it easily in some fashion.
I suspect the things are a little more invovled than shoving a pipe cleaner in a hollow cord. Pipe cleaners are fairly flimsy and they wouldn't puff out the fabric of the cord to look right - it would look lumpy is my guess.
She's got a patent pending on her idea so I'm going to choose to believe she's a crafty gal with great ideas who knows how to market.
Bravo to her.
PS - if anything, I think thick telephone wire would work better than pipe cleaners. Of course, I'd rather spend $12 and save myself the hassle of making them.

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
You're welcome. I'll post a review when I get mine too.
I'm all about supporting crafting women out there. I think Heather Bailey is one of the new crop of young women who are like Martha Stewart but more accessible & reasonable!

I agree. I was once chastised on another board for expressing great interest in The Slanket. "It would be so easy to make one for less than 10 bucks! How could you even think of buying something like that?" My sewing skills are limited to altering bedlah - I couldn't put sleeves on a blanket (or anything else, for that matter) if you held a gun to my head. I do realize that someone with even the most rudimentary of sewing skills could make one, but I still think it's a totally cool and marketable idea.

Re: Cute Hair accessory - TrashTies
We could all theoretically make our own ponytail holders by stitching elastic into little circles. Bending wire into bobby pins would be pretty easy, too, I imagine.
But we still buy them.
