How to re-attach Hot Fix stones
Hi
I got a lovely newEman off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...9512&rd=1&rd=1 (pics soon),
Anway, as soon as my ass got into it one of the hot fix stones fell off. What do you re-attach them with when they no longer have their gluey stuff? Is there some sort of special glue?

Hi Zafira,
I've been working with hot fix stones on my own costumes. I have yet to try to reheat the glue on one that has fallen off, you would need a bejeweler to do that. A simpler way would be to use "Gem-Tac" glue which is designed for glueing crystals to fabric. It is cheap and will last you a long time for other little jobs. Just be careful to cover the full back of the stone and not get it on your costume. It dries clear. Here in Canada you can buy it at Michaels craft shop.
Hope this helps.

A hot glue gun is only about $20 from Jo-Ann Fabrics. It's pretty handly for all kinds of craft stuff.

I have been coveting the hot set joy stick for so long.
Do you people love it?
The ladies at the Fabric depot have all blinged out their aprons in the bridal section.
I just think the gems are so spendy...
I hear they get really freeking hot.
(except for the ones that fall off )
sorry for the rdirecting the thread but I got to know!

You'll have to excuse my perverted mind, but that just sounded soooo naughty!

I have used "Gem-Tac" before with some success but was not always happy with it. I met with a lady that designs and makes professional ice skating costumes and she uses "E6000." I have never used anything else since for gluing on fabric purposes. Just make sure you do have adequate ventilation.

Hi, Zafirah! If that lovely lilac costume doesn't work out, or if you'd ever consider selling it, could you keep me in mind, let me know? I LOVE the color. Would buy it instantly if offered! Thanks so much! Tanya SF (Naiya)

Oh, E6000 is fabulous stuff. Like mentioned be careful with the fumes and ventilation and you will need it to lay undisturbed and flat overnight as it sets and dries.
Or...good ol' hot glue gun (also as mentioned before). If you go this route, simply scratch up the *BOTTOM* of the gem so the glue has something to hold onto without seeping over the edges and being seen.
The hot glue gun will give you more options in the future for any other problems that may arise....best investment I ever made.

I have no idea about attaching stones but would also like to fight you for your costume, to the death if necessary. It's stunning.

Hi Ladies, the pro's fully recommend AGAINST hot glue -- it is not designed for fabric, will harden and break off. Will not dry clean. I don't think you want to use it on a fabulous costume. Use E6000 or Gem-Tac -- something designed for the job -- glues are a science unto themselves! I tried making a hot tub cover - it is still suriviing -- but the glue is the secret!

It depends on what kind of hot glue you use. I am a pro designer for 8 years in theatre and oprea district...many dry clean only costumes. The hot glue sticks used for costuming dry softer and semi flexible and are VERY dry cleanable. These are the sticks that have a yellow tint to them, not the white or clear sticks.

another vote against the hot glue gun (the regular one, which turns into hard, unflexible pieces once dry) and in favor of gem-tac. I never used the hot glue gun with the yellow tint-fillings, where do you get them? Are they specially designed for use on fabric?

I'm not sure which company they are ordered from, but our costume shop orders these things by the monster crates!!! They are fabric friendly. Some of our clients are big named, internationally known companies and corporations and they have never had any complaints. And let me tell ya....they are ANAL about quality.
I heard there is a retail equivalent to it that you can buy at Hobby Lobby or Michaels, but I'd have to research the name. I guess I'm spoiled, I buy out of the stock at work

I don't like using hot glue. I prefer using rubber cement. You need to be careful with the glue on stones however, because often, once they come off the metal backing also comes off and then the stone loses it color and shine.
I prefer to use sew on jewels whenever possible. They are a bit more pricey but they stay on better, last longer and best of all, can be re-used on another costume.

Another vote for E6000! My best friend and I use it all the freaking time when constructing cosplay costumes, and we affectionately refer to E6000 as "Cancer Glue" (referring to the need for adequate ventilation when using it). We've never had anything that we've glued with E6000 come undone, even weight-bearing type stuff.
My new Eman started shedding hot fix stones as soon as I got it out of the box, too. I took it to the tailor and more stones fell off as she was altering it, too. That is really disappointing. I'm thinking I'm going to sit down one of these days and just pick them all off prophylactically (there are maybe only two dozen of them), and replace them all with flatback Swarovski crystals. They sparkle so much more!
Congrats on getting such a beautiful costume at such a nice price, too! I love the design and the color.
