Two Hair Questions

Has anyone tried dry shampoo? I have semi oily hair that really needs daily washing (yeah, yeah, I know it produces more oil if you wash it every day...but I swear I don't wash it daily and I look like crap). My skin is dry and daily showering really takes its toll on me in the winter, even with moisturizing. I was thinking a dry shampoo might improve the look of my hair and keep me out of the shower.

The other question: How do I deal with those little crazy frizzy hairs? I am gentle on my hair, I don't tug or pull it and I always use a wide tooth comb and conditioner to keep it smooth, but I still have these wacky wirey curly hairs that won't stay flat. I have a lot of hair and it's long.

Any suggestions?

Hi Mish Mish. I can answer one of your questions. I've tried a bunch of different dry shampoos (my hair is a little oily too). The one I have found works best for me is called Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo. I use it in between shampoos and find that I can go three days without a shampoo if I use it daily. It smells nice and brushes out easily. A little goes a long way, no need to over-apply. The bottle lasts a long time.

I'd avoid the dry shampoos that come in an aerosol can. The tips always get clogged and I'm forever futzing with it trying to get them to work.

I bought the Oscar Blandi online somewhere. I'm sure if you google it, you'll find it.

I get the frizzies really bad too. In the winter I'm usually able to shock my husband two or three times a day from the static off my hair.

I *adore!!!* SunSilk anti-frizz leave in conditioner, even after a few days I don't feel like there is a "skin" on my hair. Hope it help you too!

You can also try corn-starch-based baby powder. At Target they have lavender scented baby powder. Bumble and Bumble also has COLOURED hair powder to match your hair colour.

Check out a book called "Curly Girl" that is a book all about dealing with curly and wavy hair. It's awesome.

I have waist length hair and use just plain cornstarch or talc when I want to go an extra day between washing. Use it sparingly ... you can always add more later. I either put a little in my hands and then rub it gently into my roots (if I'm wearing my hair down) or smooth it along my part and down the roots a little bit (if I'm wearing my hair pinned up). Much cheaper than a commercial dry shampoo.

For the wispies, a little aloe vera gel work to smooth them down.

I don't have experience with dry shampoos, but just wanted to say, I'm skeptical that washing frequently really makes the scalp produce more oil. I suspect this is one of those old popular sayings that seems to sound logical but isn't really true, like "shaving your legs will make the hair grow thicker." I think something I might try if I had this problem is shampooing daily but on alternate days doing it in the kitchen sink rather than in the shower, so the shampoo would be contacting only the scalp and not getting all over me.
Just a thought, for whatever it's worth . . .

I only use dry shampoo (solid shampoo). In fact, my hair stopped falling out as soon as I did. Have semi-oily hair as well, very fine and tendency to frizz and psoriasic skin. Nice combo. Urgh.

Also try only adding the conditioner to the ends of your hair that way the scalp will not looks so oily. shampoo in warm water rinse it with warm to open hair cuticle rinse conditioner with cold to close again.

Mish, does your hair fall out a lot in the shower? I'm pretty gentle with my hair, but even so I, too, have that little halo of baby frizzies around my head. My hair falls out a lot, and I've attributed the frizzies to this phenomenon. They're just the little guys trying to grow back in. What helps is to have a wide-toothed, single row, big, plastic comb to distribute the conditioner on my hair since this helps minimize tugging and breaking of hairs.

UH. YEAH.

btw, their Glitterbugs are the best for dancing. Since it is glitter imbued oil bar, it won't dry and the glitter won't flake off like it normally does for gel-based glitter. And it smells good and keeps you moisturised at the same time.

Sorry I threadjacked. Just to get us back on track, as a stylist, you're all suggesting excellent techniques! I'm also curious to hear about new products I've never used before.

Mish Mish - I have similar hair issues. I would recommend buying a shampoo with no SLS or detergents, and try diluting it with water. This gentle mixture does not strip your hair and scalp of natural oils completely, which helps stop the overproduction problem. It has allowed me to stretch an extra day between washing, which I have *never* been able to do before. Remember to always condition, but with oily hair, condition below the ears only.

You may have to "train" your scalp to produce less oil, using the above method as well as just putting up with less than perfect hair every second day. If you can get away with it, it's well worth it.

Another strategy for combating greasies and keeping the scalp happy is to rinse with an apple cider vinegar or white vinegar dilution. Put about a tablespoon of vinegar in a litre or so of water. After you've washed your hair, pour the vinegar dilution slowly over your scalp, massaging in gently. You can rinse if you like, but it's better if you don't. The smell goes away once your hair is dry.

Frizzy hair - try some 100% pure Aloe Vera gel. The clear stuff, not the blue or green stuff for sunburn. Take a little Aloe Vera in your hand, and use it to smooth down the frizzies. Aloe is very gentle on hair and won't make it dry or crackly like other products can. It's very easily washed out, and doesn't create build up issues.

If you feel like dying your hair, you could try henna. It is supposed to do wonderful things for frizzy hair. I've never tried it, but I want to! If you've dyed your hair with chemical dyes, and they haven't grown out, don't use compound henna, as the metallic salts in it really don't mix well with compounds in chemical dyes. Although i have not tried it personally,i've read many people swear by Klorane's Dry Shampoo.I'm a fan of many of Klorane's hair products.They are totally free of dubious silicones.

I've never used a dry shampoo but have used baby powder - sparingly. It works as far as the oil but leaves my hair with bad static fly aways.

As far as the frizzy's - the only thing I use to tame those is a (depending on how often you need it) - mayonnaise conditioner (I basically lather up with good old fashioned mayo and leave in my hair for about 10 minutes under a shower cap - then rinse off - use cool water - then a quicky shampoo.). Then once in a while for a ton of shine - I will use a beer rinse - any kind of beer works well - the lighter the beer, the less you'll smell like a bar - I shampoo, condition and then pour an entire beer - slowly over my hair, rub it in, pour some more, leave it in for a couple of minutes, then rinse - cool water.

I feel like a commercial for Aubrey Organics, but his Saponin shampoo will make you cry with joy for oily heads. I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida when I first tried it, and the difference was like night and day. I have oily hair and skin which was worse in the FL humidity. Saponin saved my hair's life.

And no one has suggested a natural Boar Bristle brush. Brush your hair upside down with it and it distributes the oils GREAT! I can't emphasise enough what a difference this makes to your hair.
