Anything mixed with buttermilk will have greater affect as the lactic acid helps to pull nutrients into the skin. A lot of veterinary preparations for dogs with itchy skin problems contain lactic acid for that reason. Buttermilk and oatmeal paste is an old timey skin care recipe.

Used teabags on the eyes when you take a lie down rest prior to a performance will do wonders for eye puffiness.

Re: Homemade beauty secrets - please share!

For anyone with super sensitive skin, just tried this last night:
avacado, cucumber and honey pureed and used for 30min on face
Made my skin so soft!

dried milk, honey and oatmeal (in a bag) for the bath (rather than spend lots of money for the chemical milk baths found in stores)

honey and cinnamon together for purifying mask for troubled skin (use only a teaspoon of cinnamon)

beer in hair for shine and softness

I'll have to look for Emu oil. Sounds great. Will also look for rose water; I think that's my favorite tip so far. But honey, as mentioned, is wonderful for the whole body, hair and all

WARNING FROM NISIMA ON HAIR RINSES MADE FROM KITCHEN INGREDIENTS: Well, I used a mixture of cider vinegar, cinnamon, paprika and cayenne pepper that I read in a magazine would "bring out red highlights" and boy did it ever! Problem was, I rinsed it off in the SHOWER and got "red highlights" in the form of a rash over my entire body as my pores opened up in the warm water -----aiyeeeeeee! Jumped out of shower, too late, too late; by then rash had quickly morphed into yes, giant red hives all over and I literally raced to dermatologist who gave me a shot of *something" plus 10 days of prednisone pills. Doctor said it was actually more like a chemical "burn" than an allergic reaction because spices act as a chemical irritant to produce the "heat" we love in food. Not so good on skin, however, obviously...................

I really like this book for natural "beauty" recipes: Amazon.com: The Body Book: Recipes for Natural...Amazon.com: The Body Book: Recipes for Natural... It's marketed more towards young girls, but I like it! It includes some little vials of essential oils, a nail brush, pumice stone, and a couple other items.

Well, there is one consolation about the emu bird; every article I read said they are not killed just for the oil, the meat is used; however, obviously this is no consolation if one is vegetarian.....[/QUOTE]

Who's eating the emu meat??? It's certainly not on the supermarket shelves in Australia, so I can't imagine where it goes. Perhaps it's a secret ingredient in dog food ... or being marketed as an agent of increased virility in Asia...

PS - I was in a wildlife park two days ago and saw a parent emu saunter past with a brood of baby emus. Perhaps I should have run after them and rubbed my face on their feathers, to help with the wrinkles.

Try powdered milk! It's too yuck to drink, but make a paste with it with water and it is the best facial cleanser. It leaves your skin sooo soft! I bet it would be great after that sugar peel! My grandma uses EVOO *before* she dries off in the shower in the mornings and she has the softest skin of anyone I've ever known.

I have this - it's where the rose water and pineapple tips came from. By Klutz/Chicken Sox. It's got other cute recipes too - some of them mentioned here - and most are super easy to make.

Re: Homemade beauty secrets - please share!

This was hopefully a once in a lifetime experience. Sunday night I got in the jacuzzi with my friend at her house. We soaked in it for about 2.5 hours. I have blonde hair (color treated w/extentions, but I have been in jacuzzis a million time, so I didn't care that my hair was in the water).
When we got inside the house I have discovered that the hair from my ear down was green! Not greenish,or a weird shade of blonde, GREEN as in monster green!

I totally freaked out, thinking, I have school+teach Tuesday, dance Wednesday+weekend. I can't go out in public like that! I can't do a ponytail, even french-twist, the green would still show. I took a shower, hoping it will come out-nope.
She got online and typed in "green hair from jacuzzi" and reported to me with a hopeful smile that "there are articles all over the internet, so you are not alone!! There may be a solution!"

We found that tomato will help get it out. It said to use tomato juice for a few minutes. I put tomato sauce (a bit more concentrated, and paste would be even better) on and after about an hour we saw improvement. It was still greenish in places, but now it was mostly a yellow shade of blonde, but I could deal with that.
I went home, more tomato sauce for another hour or so, then it actually became close to my shade,w/a little yellowish tone to it-it wasn't bad.

This morning I found that my hair had the consistency of hay. After brushing it got softer, but still it was so damaged. I spent all day in another tomato-wrap followed by olive oil wrap and now my hair is acceptable.

I find it absolutely amazing that simple tomato siuce was able to bring back my hair color. You can't imagine how green it was, unless you saw it. I'm still in shock. After 1 day and 4 showers, followed by scented lotion, my hands still smell like bleach. So does my friend's. I will never go near that jacuzzi again-way to much chemicals.

What I also found that the tomato sauce was really good for my otherwise normal hair - it gave it body and a nice tone. So those of you, that have color treated blonde hair and the color goes a little yellowish, tomato sauce will fix it.

I'm just glad it happened now (2 weeks before I need to redo my hair) instead of after I spent hundreds of dollars and would have to live with it for 5-6 months, or redo it again. The hair is so straight now, it looks weird. I will have to steam curl it, even if I'm not performing, just to make it look normal.

I had a good attitude during the whole thing - I told my friend if I wasn't laughing I would be crying. We giggled through the whole time: tomato sauce all over her bathroom, my head in the sink, she's washing it out. More tomato sauce, still green. Sitting on bed with my towel wrap, waiting for the results, contemplating what to do... We knew we'd look back and laugh even more.
She thought about wipping out her camera, and me, putting it on my website - look at the real Marianna :) Green!

Re: Homemade beauty secrets - please share!

Red counteracts green, and viceversa. That's one reason why tomato works in this instance.

Re: Homemade beauty secrets - please share!

But still, the bleach actually stripped my hair of important features such as texture, shine, etc besides color. Tomato gave it almost all back.
I first thought it was just the red - green connection, but had hopes, because the solution was posted on yahoo questions, and the asker choose it as best answer, so I figured she tried it.

Re: Homemade beauty secrets - please share!

Wow, I thought I was the only one obsessed with Emu oil! I use it for everything, but I do not mix it with any lotion, I apply as a night moisturizer. I get the Thunder Ridge Brand, very light, no sent.

Other weird homemade beauty secrets I do, I put one big dropper full of my favorite perfume in a bottle of cheap unscented Luberderm body lotion instead of buying my perfume lotion that is $85 a jar and full of drying alcohol.

I use a mixture of Sea Salt, Olive Oil and Eucalyptus Essential Oil as a scrub to make my feet pretty in between pedi's.
