flowers in your hair...

hi all,
i have a quick question.

this friday i'm doing a show for an oil company.
it's an arabic night so i'm sticking to mainly egyptian dancing and music.
i'm wearing a gorgeous black and silver bedlah, very traditional..
however i really, really want to wear a flower in my hair!
it's a gorgeous black rose corsage..
but i'm a bit worried because i know it's mainly tribal dancers who do so and i don't want to blur the boundaries..

what should i do?
do any egyptian/trad. dancers wear flowers in their hair?

I do, but I wear it by my ear, not the way tribal hair flowers are worn. I think it's cute, and I don't see anything wrong with it...it's just another accessory.

Wearing flowers in your hear is common in many countries of the world.
So it's really nothing exclusive to Tribal style dancers. They got that idea from somewhere, you know

It's also questionable if your audience there has ever seen a Tribal dancer?

And finally, if your choice of music, your dancing and your costume is Egyptian style, I don't think a single flower will make you Tribal.

Actually I sometimes want to tell people that just by putting on a Tribal costume, they are not automatically Tribal dancers if they still dance "normal bellydance".....

I have a Pharaonics costume that came with a big flower on a comb to put in your hair. My hair's too thick for it, so Amira had it sewn onto my headband. As such, it sits as if it were a huge pink peony stuck behind my ear. One of my favourite costumes and I still love it to bits.

I ALWAYS wear a flower in my hair when I do cabaret. I get the cheap ones from Claires that are either on a pony tail holder, or on a hairpin, and then I twist it around my headband. that way, my hair is down, but out of my face. :)

It is hardly exclusive to tribal dancers. Go for it!

And some of us do wear them by the ear. Or all over. Or in back. Or wherever. There is no rule about it in any case!

I've had the exact same angst issue over a headdress with flowers and feathers in it. I say go for it - costuming is supposed to be about looking attractive and enhancing your performance, not "style" IMO.

I sometimes wear the silk rose corsage which i wore at my moms wedding in my hair. It's fun and sassy!

I think worn near the ear or clipped to an elegant ponytail wold look beautiful and not tribally.

I adore wearing flowers in my hair. I get mine from the tribal girls (thanks, sharon - I love me my red lilies!), who are so kind as to glue them to hair clips and adorn them with glitter so I don't have to.

with a ponytail/banana clip fall, I'll tuck a flower up behind my ear. I have a cute fluffy maribou pouf with a feather butterfly I wear with my leopard costume. and lately I've been using a shorter updo-type hairpiece, with which I tuck a big red lily underneath on both sides. it's very lush and full and glamorous. :)

that's totally made me feel better, i'm definitely gonna wear it now because it is very "me".. it makes me feel cuter/sexier etc when i'm dancing!!

Now that I think of it, Cassandra had a whopping great purple flower in her hair at Oasis, and if she can wear a flower, anybody can.

I think hair down with a flower doesn't say "wannabe tribal" in any way. I felt weird about it because my hair is so short now that anything floral on my head looks dangerously like some form of updo and hair-garden. And yet, I need something on my head now I have no hair!

Until this post, i completely forgot that i almost never danced without flowers, or a mini tiara, or something in my hair until about 5 months ago.
I used to wear hair pieces and would use decorations to cover up where they attached. I think it looked very nice. now my natural hair is bright red and in mini dreads. very raggedy ann in length and color. I keep it out of my face with a super skinny headband the width of the single band of rhinestones that sits upon it. Any suggestions for dolling my hair up a bit more?
I don't have a camera. so sorry for my lack of photos.
