preventing costume wrinkles while traveling

I'm going to be traveling with a costume and would appreciate any suggestions about wrinkle prevention. I do own a steamer but am trying to travel as light as possible, particularly since I'm going to be crashing with a few different friends rather than setting up camp in a hotel room for the whole stay, and would rather not bring it if I can help it. Is it possible to de-wrinkle in advance and keep it that way (rolling vs. folding? garment bag vs. suitcase?), or should I just give up? (If it matters ... we're talking polyester chiffon skirts and a silk veil.) Thanks in advance for the advice...

Roll the costume in a towel, then hang it up or drape over a chair when you get to your destination. If any wrinkles don't come out, hang in the bathroom and close the door during your shower.

Works for me! It also helps to choose a costume that doesn't wrinkle much to begin with.

Re: preventing costume wrinkles while traveling

I will roll a silk veil kind of randomly into a "wad" (can't think of a better word!) as lightly as I can; fold loosely the long way 2-3 times, then roll, again very loosely. Then seal in a good-size plastic bag along with as much air as possible. One option is a plastic grocery-type bag with handles and no holes, and tie the top handles together tightly while trapping as much air as you can in the bag. Shake up the bag to loosen the veil even more, and try to pack so the air won't get squeezed out. This won't deliver a perfectly flat veil like you just ironed it - but it gives just a uniform light wrinkling which usually looks pretty nice - not the awful-looking straight fold lines or the nasty crushed look - also much easier to touch up with steam.

Re: preventing costume wrinkles while traveling

Especially lycra style skirts, rolling in a towel works well. Veils/ Depends. Some I simply wear as a scarf around my neck. . .
