3/4 Circle Veil...how to???
I have a question, and would like to know if anyone can help. I need directions on how to make a 3/4 Circle veil.
Most circular veils are half circle, and can't for the life of me find any directions online on how to make one.
If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ask DEBBIE. She makes my 3/4 double veils. She's a veil wizard. Tell her I sent you... :0)

Cut out a half circle. Then cut a quarter circle. Then cut that quarter circle in half, and sew each half to one side of the half circle.

Re: 3/4 Circle Veil...how to???
For those of you who have or have made them, what fabrics do you think work well for this?
Also, Shira, when you sew the two smaller pieces to the larger one, should the place where they meet (if you were imagining a full circle, the center of the circle) have a strong right angle, or should you soften it a bit when you hem it, rounding that a bit? If I were holding the veil, with it behind me, how should the place be that would be at the back of my neck?
I am attending a workshop in a couple weeks, with a segment on 3/4 circle veil...and I have never worked with one before.

If it's double veil, tissue lamé would be my preference. If it's single veil, silk or very lightweight chiffon?

Re: 3/4 Circle Veil...how to???
I have doene it this way. . .
Cut out three 1/4 circles. using a flat feld seam (think the seam on the inside of your jeans) stitch them together. Then hem the outside and bottom edges.
The flat feld seams help to eleminate drag. Doing this in three even pieces helps to maintain balance.

I don't make a point of trying to soften the angle. I just do the best I can to hem it neatly.
I concur with the suggestion of tissue lamé for double veil or silk for floaty wafting veil. Another good fabric can be double georgette. It all depends on what style of movement the workshop will focus on. I suggest contacting the workshop instructor or sponsor and asking what kind of fabric is recommended for this particular instructor's style.

Re: 3/4 Circle Veil...how to???
I have an article...
Choosing A Veil
This said, I'd like some verification/help in improving it. Most of the information on 3/4 circle veil fabric choices is hearsay. And I'd *LOVE* to talk to anyone who has any experience with Georgette veils of any type - I've been wondering about Georgette veils for some time...

Strong right angle is exactly what it is supposed to be. 3/4 veil work is sometimes called toriador work. think the moves the bull fighters do! So you can use a heavier weight fabric.
When Sahra did her 3/4 piece in her anniversary show 2 years ago, the dancers used lace veils which were edged with ribbon.
Zorba - check out my rakkasah video on youtube. I was using a georgette veil there.

Re: 3/4 Circle Veil...how to???
I always use 3/4 in tissue lame' that way they move fast and have a 'snap' to them, I prefer to use them as percussive. If you cut the lame in into even triangles, then surge them together you will get a nice veil, here is a clip off my site of one of my 3/4 pieces.

My teacher had a monster veil in turquoise georgette with a beaded edge that was her "power veil", and that came with an Egyptian costume. It was a BEAST. I got to play with it a couple of times and it was very mighty and heavy. Awesome and dramatic, but hard work. Good veil for a man, I think, because you can really use your strength with it. In fact, you have to use your strength with it - but it also drapes gorgeously.

Nice veilwork!
Looks like it handles a lot like Chiffon? How does Georgette's "springiness" affect handling?
I guess I'm gonna have to get my hands on a Georgette veil so I can try it out!

Yea, it does seem to me (having never touched one), that a Georgette veil would be on the heavy side - kinda like a polyester veil. I'm more of a floaty person - I like lighter Chiffons, Silk (of course), and surprisingly, Organza. I was gratified to find out that Ma*Shuqa also likes Organza - I think its the best kept secret in veil fabrics.
But I'm always wanting to try something new!

I love using Georgette for double veil and also for one-handed work. It flows more beautifully than tissue lamé or organza.

Thank you!
I found it to be more responsive than chiffon but mainly because of the weight. Think 8 - 10 mm haboti silk. Or a good crepe satin.
With the exception of the veil trying to wrap itself around my head at the beginning of the set, I didn't find that it handled that much differently. BUT you won't get a sustained float out of it.
