There are actually 2 kinds of glitter, the one that is shown that has an opaque knit backing. I however prefer the glitter dot that comes on a sheer mesh, chiffon like backing. Much lighter and flows great. I use it for circle skirts.

OMG, I HAD some of this in snakeskin! It wasn't exactly glitterdot, it was like actual clear sequins all over the fabric, right?
I wanted to make a beledi dress/galibeya out of that snakeskin, but it sat on my shelf for about two years & I finally gave up and sold it. My heart is still broken, I want it BACK!

You might be talking about the sewed on sequin chiffon? That is different than glitterdot which is glued on pressed metallic pieces. But the sequin chiffon is the ultimate! Most of my skirts are made out of that! But sequin chiffon can run anywhere from $15 to $75 a yard. Sheer glitterdot is a much cheaper alternative if you can find it.

I about went crazy trying to sew a glitter-dot skirt last year. Thanks to suggestions from bhuzzers, I learned helpful sewing techniques and finished the skirt without landing in the funny farm. The skirt is lovely, but it's going to be awhile before I summon the courage to try sewing glitter dot again!

Glitter dot
I sewed a gold glitter-dot beledi dress. I love it. Hated sewing it.
I have two swords and I'm not scared of any of you.
I need to see pictures of the leopard print glitter dot....that MUST be the gayest fabric in the world!
I once wore my dress to do a routine at an AIDS benefit. A few days later, my BGBF (that's best gay boyfriend) told me that a friend of his was there, and liked me best of all. I said, "Of course he did! I was in head-to-toe gold sequins!" My friend said he couldn't even argue with my reasoning.

Nope, it's just like regular glitterdot except that the "sequins" are clear, like Lauren described.
A dress. Hmm.... Not sure if I have enough of it, but it's a pretty appealing thought. I was also thinking of maybe making a skirt (with a coordinating skirt underneath it, I have no issues with cleavage galore but I'm not crazy about showing a ton of leg, go figure) and matching arm drapes...

I have a costume made with the same stuff. A picture of the clear glitterdot costume I just bought is in my profile. I just got through adding the bra fringe and doing major bra surgery to get it to fit an A cup (I bought it from someone who is a D cup ). It's really fun and cute, even if it is glitterdot!

Glitterdot does look good from far away. Up close, I don't love it so much. It is an easy sparkle fix for mass costumes, or something simple, but I otherwise don't care for it.
If I were to join the Roller Derby ( whichI won't because I already have the busted knees of a line-backer), my name would totally be Glitter Dot.

Hi Dunyah,
I can only assume you are referring to The Tiger Lilies! As far as I know we were the only ones with red glitter dot costumes!
I have a VERY VERY OLD sewing machine. Completely made out of metal, no plastic parts whatsoever. The thing weighs a TON and can sew glitter dot noooooo problem (lycra is another story....). We hand sewed the bras.
The costumes looked wonderful and really showed off the 30 second vibration shimmy on our video!
If anyone want to see

towards the bottom.
Have a great day,

i can't see glitter dot with ou laughing because i always think of the poor bhuzzer who posted in an absolute panic because her little girl was being very helpful and washed her own princess dress and put it in the dryer and now the inside of the dryer was covered in glitter dot dots.
i confess i don't remember who that was. i was laughing so hard i was worthless.
whoever you are, i'm sorry for making light of the domestic crisis.
it's the zill brigade for me.

...and here I am at home sewing with glitterdot fabric, so of course I am thinking of you all... I'm using it to mimic chainmail for a Knight costume for a fancy dress party.

You said "Fancy dress party."
I LOVE IT!
That has to be one of my favorite phrases ever.
That totally brightened my day.

We've been doing an official Fancy Dress Party for our science fiction convention for several years now. We've done themes of:
1. Generally fancy
2. Pirates!
3. Film Noir
4. Carnival of Venice
This year is "Myths and Legends". I always feel rather torn, because I'd like to wear AmCab regalia to one of these parties... but that doesn't feel like "Fancy Dress" to me, more like working clothes I may one day aspire to!

Geez... I thought gitterdot was THE prettiest fabric when I first started dancing. I tried to convince my aunt to help me make a skirt with it...she got half-way through then gave me one of those squinty-eyed, tight-lipped looks of "I'm gonna kill you". Still have the poor half-made thing in my garage.

Interesting glitter dot sewing tip found on PatternReview.com:
"When sewing the sequined knit fabric - you know the stuff, the knit fabric that has the mylar dots glued on it - take some waxed paper, cut it into strips, lay it over the fabric and sew. Without the waxed paper you end up with glue all over the needle. When I was altering a skating costume for my friend's daughter, I had to clean the needle about every 5 minutes - and that was using a titanium needle, which is supposed to prevent gunking up. But with the waxed paper, it "wipes the needle off" as you sew. When you are finished, just tear away the paper. It works like a dream!"
I'll definitely be trying this!
