Colored Assuit Sources
Hey all,
I had an old post regarding this in the old forum. SoI am bringing it up again since I can't search ofr it at work.
I am looking for so good sources to find colored assuit. Specifically purple.
Does anyone have suggestions?!
Thanks!
XOXO,
-NJ

I've bought it on eBay in the past. Also, you might try Scheherazade Imports - Lucy imports stuff from al-Wikala which I know has assuit in colors.

I have lengths of assuit in several colors for sale. Let's see......I have hot pink, red, dark green, navy blue, and beige. But you can see them on my website at www.gypsytradingcompany.net.

Assiut can be dyed using procion dye (not sure of the spelling, it's a cold water dye).

Shira do you have Lucy's contact info?! I used to buy from her when I lived in NY and she came to workshops.
I am specifically looking for Purple and need it in at least 30X 60 inches or so. THe larger sized not scarf size. I need 4 of them!

Hey NJ,
You might try contacting Tambra. Her troupe wears costumes made of different colors of assuit; maybe she can tell you where she got it, or order some for you.

If you look at my links page at www.shira.net/links.htm I'm pretty sure I have a link to her web site under the "Vendors" category. Or, try www.shira.net/directory.htm and look for her in the directory - she's in Richmond, Virginia.

I've definitely seen colors on e-bay, in scarf sizes and in dresses. GREAT prices, too. Search e-bay for 'assuit' and see what comes up.

Dahlal has some purple in stock...depends on the quailty you're looking for. IMO, there wasn't enough metal in it for my design plans.
I just ordered some beautiful, 'soft' yet lots of metal assuit from Egypt (ha has an Ebay store too). I ordered black and this BEAUTIFUL blue color (hard to explain, kind of a light, LIGHT tea-ish hue).

Yeah I saw the ones Dahlal has and I thought the same thing, not enough metal and the price was a bit steep. At least for what you got.
I contacted "Besheer" on Ebay which I love but they had to have it custom made and I didn't have time for that.
Chessurecat do you ave a source for it?!

The only other thing I can think of is to custom order a costume from Eman Zaki as she works with different colored assuit. But you wouldn't be able to just buy fabric, you would have to buy the costume from her.

Keep in mind the different qualities of Assiut for what you want to make out of it. Some of the less expensive pieces are very coarse, stiff and scratchy. Some of the better quality, finer patterned and (of course) more expensive pieces are much softer to the skin (i.e. what Eman uses on some of her higher end costumes).

Yes I don't mind paying more if its quality stuff. But I have a seamstress making the costumes for me so I need the fabric! ;-)

I saw Dahlal's assuit fabric when she was vending at the Amar Gamal workshop in East Lansing last month. I know she had red, black, and maybe green at that event. Various patterns. The red was going fast, if I recall correctly.

I hope this link works. This is a link to one of his black assuit pieces, if you look in his store, you can also see the blue (which I ordered one of each).

Yeppers...the metal pattern got me too. I figured, since I have to cut it all up to make what I want, the length may be a bonus. It'll take a few weeks to arrive and a few more weeks (I imagine) to create my design and costume...but I'll post pics when done.

Be careful when ordering an Assuit costume from Eman. She uses both the high end assuit and cheap-ish stuff. Make sure you qualify that you want the really good quality assuit.
