Giant Snaps?
Giant snaps were recommended on a thread about secure fasteners for bra & belt. None of the fabric stores in my area have these. I tried searching on line and found a site for JoAnn's fabrics that had sew-on snaps but not the size of a quarter, which was what Sarah said she used. Sarah, are you out there? Anybody know where to get these things? I could sure use some right about now for a project I'm working on. I want to wear this costume in June, so any help would be appreciated!
I could use the men's trouser hooks with velcro for back-up, that works well, too. But even the hooks I have found locally have not been as sturdy as I would like.

I use the moderately-giant snaps that are about the diameter of a nickel; perhaps those are available in your area?

I believe the company name is Wright and the snaps are called "whopper poppers" only come in black and silver. We use these at our costume shop. I'll see if I can get a direct referrence, but I won't be back to work until next week.

The nickel-sized snaps work really well. They should be enough. But I always use trouser hooks with the snaps to keep the pressure off them.

I just found giant snaps at Michaels.
It's a craft store. I just happened to be in one looking for a paper punch and lo and behold, there they were!
Couldn't find them anywhere....

The Joann's near me has carried the nickel size snaps for quite some time. I use one of those and a couple skirt hooks to secure my costumes. They just started selling the big monster size snaps (quarter size). I'm excited to try them. (wow- that's a sewing geek phrase right there- "excited to try a new snap?")

Thanks, everybody.
When I inquired at the local JoAnn's they were like, what? They never heard of such a thing. They told me to go to the hardware store. I don't think so, I want sew-in snaps. But thanks for all the info, at least I can keep looking around.

The Joanns near me has really big snaps. I dont think they are quite as big as a quarter but they are pretty big and really strong. Maybe you could try joanns.com?

The ones the Joann's near me started carrying are BIGGER than a quarter. They are by Dritz. Item number 80-125-1. 30mm sew on snaps.

The Joann's near me carries the Dritz snaps as well - I just picked them up this week. (Geek here too, I jumped up and down in the aisle when I found them!)
Here's large Dritz snaps, I have used these before and they are about the size of a quarter -

And here's the ones that Samira is referring to, though no photo -

Hopefully this will help your Joann's to order some, or help you find them online somewhere else. Good luck!

I never use snaps especially on a bra. I always prefer heavy duty hook and eyes, for coats. I prefer 4 sets of hooks for extra security and sew them on with button and carpet thread. I've had bras pop open on me before and this method works the best for me.

I don't think anyone uses just snaps, but the combination of snaps and hooks works especially well since they have two different failure mechanisms:
Snaps fail when the two pieces pull apart, but they prevent the two pieces from sliding from side to side. Hooks and eyes fail when the hook piece slides past the eye piece, but they keep the fabric from being lifted apart. The combination of the two together stabilizes the connection both from both sliding and separating apart. Each one basically prevents the other from failing.
