costume story, sort of a vent

i have a beautifull red bella costume. custom made, red and gold, that always has had some bad karma for me.

- i had to refuse the first one bella made (wrong colour, wrong size, etc). i was especially unhappy they could not find a chiffon that matched the velvet
- it took 9 months to finally get the costume. (with a matching skirt though!)
- it was part of an argument with my ex-company.

but it's beautifull, so i let go of the funny feelings and used it a little bit. red is the only colour me and two other dancers have bella's from the same style in, so it gets used the rare time (two three times per year) we need to match. me and aurea got new matching bella's (in red) but that doenst match with the red one our third dance friend has, so i had to keep this one.

but now saterday, the skirt got ripped!!!!

we are rehearsing for an artsy fartsy show with pragha khan, the scene we are in involves a big red sofa on wheels that the actress is sitting on; and that needs to move across the stage quite a bit. we dance a mix of belly dance and contemporary. when rehearsing i told the director: there is no way we can do that in our belly dance costumes. he was all "oh, you dancers, dont you know by now, we make the choreography first, that's the most important and then comes the costuming", me: "well, that's all good and well but a wide skirt has very different ways you can move with it that a narrow one or trousers, and what we are making now will not work with our traditional bellydance costumes" (and that's what they wanted us to wear).

so, saterday, we rehearse in costume, and the sofa runs over the skirt of my red bella (beautifull deep red; expensive chiffon, much nicer than bella's usual chiffon). result: one giant rip!!!

i was/am very upset.

so
- now we dont have costumes for the show. and it's friday. we will probably end up wearing black jazz pants with a belt on top. we will no longer look like they want us to look like and we dont even have matching trousers.
- i dont know what to do with this costume now.

i paid 700E for it originally. i could sell the bra and belt, sleeves and head band? not sure what to ask for it. it's in mint condition, well, except for the skirt now! and then i get a new red bella...

or i get a new skirt for it and keep it.

ok, no real questions really, just wanted to vent/share my little story.

it's funny, they are just clothes/costume items really, but i get so attached to them, i almost started crying when it ripped.

I'm feeling for you. Is there a chance that you might find a matching red skirt? Maybe a professional seamstress could fix the rip?

the rip is too big to fix. and it's not just a rip, the whole material is falling apart where the sofa ran over, like lots of small rips around the big one.

and it is, or rather was, such a beautifull skirt, i'm not sure it's chiffon, it's totally different from bella's usual chiffon, much heavier and such a magnificent colour. it's hemmed with golden thread, and the slits are decorated with golden paillettes, and i have a veil with the same golden thread hem.

just writing it down makes me all agry again.

* sips tea and tries to calm down*

i think i'll take the whole set to bella, and ask if they can make a new skirt.

or sell. i just dont feel like wearing it anymore anyway.

It might not do any good, but I'd be arguing furiously with that director. You *told* him it wouldn't work in your costume, he insisted you do it anyway, it should be his responsibility to replace the costume.

I know that probably wouldn't work, and doesn't solve your problem of nothing to wear for the show, but still...

I know exactly what you mean, I wouldn't feel like wearing it anymore either after all the bad karma attached. I'd either sell it on Bhuz as a fixer-upper or take it to Bella and see if they could fix it, THEN sell it. And get a different red costume to match the group.

And too bad the black pants aren't the look they wanted, but if they want you to move furniture in a bella, they need to provide the bellas! Or maybe you could wear bra/belt sets with simple (inexpensive) skirts. Still, very sad/frustrating.

yeah, i would hope they would sort of offer to replace it. but if they dont:

- the director wasnt even there when it happened, it was a rehearsal with just the dancers. so technically he didnt even tell me to put the costume on... (yeah, i'm blaming myself here). i wish he had been there and would have SEEN it doesn work. not even sure he'll believe me still..
- we've done more work with him in the past, and very pleasurable work (he asked us for the heizel scouts thing), and hope to do more in the future.. so i dont want to be "difficult" you know....
- he is also just "hired" by the project for this show, and has no say over finances what so ever.

ah well, thanks for the sympathy. will take it to bella, and then sell it either without a skirt, or with a new matching skirt, or let the buyer choose whether she wants me to pick up an all new bella skirt (easily 70-80 €!) , or will shop for one herself...

I once had the very same problem with my dark red Bella:

I totally ripped it off at the back when the seem got caught by the heels of my shoes. No way to fix it. Sent it to Bella and they exchanged the chiffon with the best matching color they could find. The chiffon was a bit different (little bit lighter, different quality) but it was totally o.k. to me. Payed 50€ + shipping.

On Bella costumes in that style usually the chiffon is sewn to the top by hand after the top was beaded, so the chiffonpart is very easy to replace.

Is it possible to use the veil fabric to repair/replace the ripped part of the skirt?
