Photo file type

When I uploaded my photo it said it was the wrong type. i dont even know what type it is or how to change it. I cropped a photo of myself in paint and then saved it. How would I change it?

I'm using JPEGs....when you go to save you should have the top field where you can enter a file name and then in the next line you should be able to choose between bmp jpg etc
