The envelopes are out on the forum page, next to the thread topics, not the individual posts within a topic. There's a list of the various envelope icons & their meanings at the bottom of the forum page.
A 'closed' envelope means there are no new posts since the last time you viewed the thread. An 'open' envelope with the piece of paper showing means there are new posts you haven't read yet. A red envelope means that thread is a hot topic, and the arrow means you have posted to that thread.
