Dvd problems- Netflix or World Dance New York?

Hey all!

I've been devouring the belly dance dvds available on Netflix while I build my own collection. I've taken the Rachel Brice Arms and Posture dvd hostage until I can buy it for myself (It is amazing!!).

I've come to expect problems with Netflix dvds skipping, being scratched, etc. I got the Heartbeat of Bellydance a couple days ago, and it wouldn't even load (first time ever happened to me!). I reported it, they sent me a replacement, and I sent the other one back. I was super excited when this one actually came up, and went through the warm up, which I really like, though it could be longer. I really wanted to use it first for learning the rhythms, and next for learning to dance to them, but it keeps freezing up a little way through the rhythm section. Both discs appeared to be in excellent condition, better than most Netflix dvds, even.

Could this be a problems with the production company, and not Netflix? I have Jenna's basics and beyond dvd, and love it and have no problems, and the Fantasy Bellydance: Magic (for inspiration, right now!) dvd. I haven't had either problems with them (from the same company). I would really like to buy this dvd when I have the extra funds, but I don't know if I want to risk having all these problems.

I have several WDNY dvds and have never had a problem with them. I'd say it's the constant use/misuse/in-and-out-of-the-mail existence of Netflix dvds. I've had quite a few dvds from Netflix that had problems of one kind or another.

I have the Heartbeat one and have no problems with it. Netflix dvds are just plain abused.

Thanks for the info! I'm giving up on this dvd for now, but it is definitely on my "to buy" list! Guess I'll keep plugging away with the arms and basic dvd until my next paycheck!

I had that happen with Belly Dance for Core Fitness - completely new and still wrapped in the plastic, that I bought from Amazon. It wouldn't even start. I sent it back, and got another, equally new one, that would start, but that had skipping, black-outs, and other phenomena that I normally associate with scratches.

I was told by Amazon that it was a widespread problem with the product, and that they would not send me another replacement (but they still sell it on their site - and they said they'd give me a full refund, since it was a defective product).

Belly Dance for Core Fitness is a World Dance New York DVD. On the other hand, I've had no problems with Sensual Belly Dance, also from them. On my other thread about basic DVDs, it was suggested that, if I really like it, I should contact World Dance New York directly and see if I could get a replacement from them.

So, my suggestion is that, if you do decide to buy it in the future, get it directly from World Dance New York, not another company (like Amazon).

Darn it. I wish I had seen your post earlier. I had already ordered the Bellydance for Core fitness though another vendor. Same problem. The workout will play, but that is it. Which doesn't help, since all the steps are explained in the part that doesn't play.

I have many other world dance New york DVD's, and have had no others with such problems.

DVDs can be duplicated or replicated....one is simply a copy like any of us can do with our dvd burns and the other is glassmaster which takes care of playing issues.

I will say that netflix stuff is abused...outside of bellydance stuff from them...I have gotten dvds that are totally cracked.

If you are seeing a problem with one particular dvd then it may have been copied versus glassmastered. I have had that problem with some dvds (not just bellydance ones). It is more expensive to glassmaster ....

Some DVD players are better than others at playing these problematic DVDs that are produced by burning.

I finally broke down and took my worst offender (a saut wa soura vid) down to Best Buy and made the sales guy play it in several DVD players until I found one that played it.

Another problem is the paper labels on homemade or small production DVDs. I wish people wouldn't use these!

I have problems with about half of the WDNY dvds that I own... off the top of my head, Heartbeat of Bellydance and East Coast Tribal do not work in anything but my laptop.

On the other hand, I have some of their dvds that work perfectly fine. I just chalked it up to how they are produced.

A lot of the newer players are not as problematic....I do have one player is SOOOO fussy over DVDs. Players and production and cracks/scratches....technology....got to love it huh....
