Habibi magazine - anyone receive any since January-ish?
So, somewhere around January or February 2007, I got my very first Habibi since Stella took over as the owner. I haven't received another since. Has anyone else?

I haven't received anything. I think I got a notice that my subscription would be honoured, since I bought one when it was run by Jennifer but so far nothing. I've written it off.

The first and last one I got was Neon on the cover a long time ago and never received any more. Sent a few emails when I heard of the takeover and hoped to get my subscriptions that I paid for but to no avail.

Did I misinterpret something? I was under the impression that since the time Stella bought it, the whole thing went kaput and is overwith. I thought they had announced Habibi was shutting down and would be no more. Maybe I dreamed it? ......

Stella bought it to revive it as a more academic focused magazine. New subscribers were definitely solicited, and old subscribers had their former subscriptions honored.
There are a lot of rumors around about what is going on. But whatever is up, so far the new publisher(s?) put out one issue about a year ago. I crossed my fingers and paid for a new subscription. I've received the fall 2006 issue, and nothing since.

Same here...I subb'ed to the new Habibi specifially to show my support to a fellow NYC area dancer and to someone who has supported the community with her Belly Dance NY website out of the goodness of her heart. I picked up the old Habibi on the newsstands and enjoyed it, but really wanted to support Stella's new effort, so I forked over my hard earned dinero for a subscription and rec'd only the first issue under her new direction.
I inquired about the status of the magazine a month ago and was told "Basically, I've been rethinking the magazine--what the field needs and what I can afford to publish. As we have learned to say these days, what's sustainable."As I had no clue what that meant, I wrote back this past week and asked if she'd made any decisions regarding it's future...I've rec'd no response.

Oh yeah, I think I remember something about that. It's just been so up and down over the past few years, my brain is scrambled. And since I've received nothing for a really long time, I guess that's what I thought I remembered hearing

Print magazines have a tough time in general unless they are well established and popular. i can't imagine the hobby mags will survive the online publishing alternatives. I was shocked to see someone in L.A. was starting one - I give it about 2 or 3 issues before it folds. What happened to the super glossy one that MECDA was doing (the one that Isis in Texas was publishing) - is that kaput now too? Chronicles - that's the name right?

Chronicles is still going, and looks pretty good. I saw a new issue when I was at Y'Halla Y'All. I'm a little burnt by my Habibi experience and didn't subscribe though..

Gawd, Habibi is SO cursed. I get the Chronicles because I'm a MECDA member, but I wouldn't pay for another magazine. The articles are so full of fluff write ups and such. But I have to say, I do enjoy looking at all the pretty pictures.

There is a new note with updated information from the publisher at the Habibi website.

This is a little off-topic, but since someone mentioned Chronicles, I subscribed for a year, and I can report that every issue came to me on time, even a few days ahead of the publication month listed on the cover.

Everyone should take the time to go to the link so you better understand what Stella has to say.

Oi. I know she wants to have a great scholarly mag and such, and don't get me wrong I have MUCH respect for her, but I would be happy just getting a magazine with reader's input and discussion and pictures of dancers in costumes than nothing at all for my $$$ at the moment. (Don't throw rocks at me!)
On the up side, Amy Smith has done an amazing job with the Belly Dance new england magazine, I think the most recent one was 60+ pages! www.bellydancenewengland.com
