Dolphina....Finger Cymbals DVD??
Has anyone used this instructional DVD or heard any reviews? She seems really mainstream-ish to me, so I want to make sure before I waste my time.
Otherwise, any suggestions for Zill instructional DVDs for a beginner?
Thanks!

Re: Dolphina....Finger Cymbals DVD??
Mesmera's "How to Play Finger Cymbals" was good. It's the only one I've ever used, so I'm sure there are others.

Re: Dolphina....Finger Cymbals DVD??
Dolphina's finger cymbals DVD is best suited to merriment with a group of your dance friends when there is much liquor involved. Now, I do think her Warrior Goddess and Veils DVD's are both good ones for EXERCISE, though not for dance instruction. But her finger cymbals video is best suited for entertainment rather than instruction.
I agree with Mish Mish that Mesmera's video is good - there's a full review on my web site at Belly Dancing: Shira's Reviews of Instructional Videos, Alphabetical List .
I also have a review of the FatChance one on my site, same link as above. (Look in the alphabetized list for Carolena Nericcio.) That one is good if you like American Tribal Style or tribal fusion because it teaches Jamila Salimpour's finger cymbal methodology on which tribal is based. But it is short, very short. I like the way Carolena teaches, just wish she covered more material. But it makes sense that she covered what she did, because her group improv dance style wouldn't suit more intricate zilling techniques. She teaches what's right for the ATS format.

Re: Dolphina....Finger Cymbals DVD??
I figured Dolphina's Finger Cymbals DVD wasn't that good. It seemed so cheesy and mainstream that I just couldn't buy it. But I thought I could be wrong.
Always trust the gut!
I was definitely looking at Mesmera's DVD, so your suggestions confirmed it. I'll definitely check out your link, Shira.
Thanks you two for the warning!!

Re: Dolphina....Finger Cymbals DVD??
I like and learned from Ansuya's first Finger Cymbals DVD, myself.
As for Dolphina's, I can only agree with Shira that it's for novelty/entertainment purposes only. Pour a glass of wine and let the hilarity begin!

Re: Dolphina....Finger Cymbals DVD??
I haven't seen Mesmeras yet but I liked Ansuya's as well. I also have the FCBD which as Shira said is short, 20 minutes) but it's good for starters.
For cd's, I like Playing Finger Cymbals with Jamila ( CDjfc - Playing Finger Cymbals with Jamila) as well as Rhythm ID with Suhaila & Susu Pampanin for practice. ( http://www.smartcart.com/suhaila/cgi...tem_num=CDrid). Great to use in the car. Just be careful when driving with zills! You may want to just tap out the rhythms instead for safety if you're the one driving!
If you're interested in Rhythms per se as a whole, I love Souhail Kasper's DVD and cd for dancers. It's more than just for drummers. Awzan Arab Rhythmic Modes:
Souhail Kaspar | Near East Music | Recordings
Souhail also teaches workshops for Drummers & dancers all over the country and they are fantastic! He'll be back in DC April 26 & 27, 2008 sponsored by the World Music Folklife Center: World Music Folklife Center - Calendar of Events
If you'll be in the area, you'll have a fabulous time!

Oh yes, I love Souhail! I have his Awzan Arabic Rhythms CD. Practice dancing to it all the time.
Thanks!
As well as for Dolphina, 1st instincts are very good! I could tell it was cheesy, but wanted to make sure it wasn't just the cynical side of me!
Looks like many have experienced that "follow the goddess" crap.
