You can still ask other people to be your friend, though. I don't think it's nonsensical to say if you close off your profile so that only your friends can see it, you have to be the one to initiate who can be your new friend.

what's nonsensical is tying functions together without stating that changing one will change the other.
it's like connecting the front porch light to the doorbell so when you turn off the light, the doorbell stops working. that might be a reasonable thing to do, but don't you think you'd want to know it was happening?
