Groups

Maybe this is a dumb question, but if anyone can post to a group that is made public, why does it need members ?

Okay, maybe Rosey can enlighten me. Is it just another private messaging instrument? And, BTW, how can you subscribe to a group thread so that you don't have to keep returning through the series of links to check?

It appears that private messaging is an important feature, If you have a group for a geographical area, or a fan club, then it is easy to send out a bulletin to the members of the group to alert them of a particular event.
In that way the group is a mechanism for convenience.

I'm not aware yet of a way to subscribe to a group thread.

The Groups feature has an option called "Public Forum". If the moderator chooses No, then non-members can not post on the group.

If the Moderator chooses No to Open Join, then members have to be invited to join the group.

So, when you see a group marked "private" it means you must be a member to post in that group.

Thank you, Rosey.

I do understand that members are necessary for private groups, just didn't see the necessity for public ones, but clearly it's more about messaging convenience. Just trying to figure it all out.

different reason

I like the group function because it is a constant topic. On the board, the topics will scroll away and fade away, but the group maintains a steady conversation or forum for that specific topic.
