What are "points"?

When viewing my profile, it says I have 14 "points" and it shows half a star for me. What does that mean?

It seems to be entirely independent of the number of messages I have posted and doesn't seem to affect those stars. But what is it?

I've got one point and I don't know what for or how to get any more, or indeed what I need them for. I think there has been an earlier thread about this but I didn't understand that either. I'm not coping with this new Bhuz at all well.

"The points thing is a system that keeps track of your participation on the other part of the site - how many pix, files, blogs, comments, events... etc etc that you upload."

My points seem to go up when I post pictures in my gallery, when I post comments on people's blogs or pictures, when I post a blog entry, when I posted on a guestbook once.
