Yay! I'm so excited, Amanda Foster and I are sponsoring Lucy and Shems in a day of workshop here in Asheville, NC. If you are in the South East, come on up/over/whichever to the mountains for a day of dance.

ewww, we have a cabin in Asheville area. I could do this if hubby won't have work travels at this time. Prays hard to belly dance god. Please let hubby be home. I'd love this.

Is this for all levels or just advanced/pro? I would be a intermediate I think.

Hey Michelle -

Both the workshops are multi-level. We're going to have a variety of folks coming and will make sure it is accessible but still challenging for everyone

I can tell you how I plan on structuring the workshop, if it helps:

-- Introduction to musical progression of baladi taqsim
-- The "feel" of baladi taqsim
-- Customarily used steps/isolations/progressions for baladi taqsim (breaking it down into the various parts of the musical progression)
-- Improvising to a baladi taqsim progression (kind of mixed in w/ the previous topic)
-- Samples of good BT, if we have time - I have videos that I'm going to bring

I'm also going to prepare a whole bunch of handouts - on the musical structure, instruments, the baladi taqsim "character", etc. I'll also bring CDs of some of the music I'll be using to teach to sell at the workshop.

I hope I can cram this into 2 hours!

You should videotape the workshop and then sell those videos!!!! I am already committed that weekend, otherwise I might just think of taking a drive to Asheville!

and... if you haven't ever been to Asheville, you should come... it's a small artsy, very progressive town in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I feel like I should say a little something about how I'll be structuring my workshop since Lucy laid her workshop out so nicely.

-- A quick history of the classical oriental entrance and what distinguishes it from baladi dancing, talk about it's typical components, it's general stylistic feel and my approach to making a great oriental entrance piece.
-- A selection of some of my personal favorite steps and combinations appropriate to this portion of your show.
-- I will have a choreographed structure (but don't be scared) it's designed to illustrate the concepts as well as putting the steps and combinations in relationship to the music, so that people will be able to take home steps and concepts and apply it to making their own great Oriental entrances.
-- A nice stretch

I'll also prepare a handout relating to the material in the workshop.

This is going to be great fun!

I love the mountains...my hubby bought some land in Marion so we try and come out that way a couple times a year.

These workshops are going to be great. They're such perfect topics for you two to be teaching -- things I'd immediately want to take with you, having seen you both dance many times. If you ever offer them in or near DC, will you please post an announcement here?
