vintage or 'current' mme. ablas
hey folks, in about 1 1/2 months i'll be able to start affording cossies again, after a move into the city....
most of my stuff is eman, raqia hassan, and one currrent modern abla, but i've been looking especially for the vintagy ablas i've drooled over from my newbie days 20 years ago, you know, those fabulous bedlahs with amazing skirts, dripping with glass fringe............especially those dresses! (anything you've seen aunt rocky wear over the years........)
colors that would be best are jewel tones, or fall colors, preferably trimmed in gold.........
anybody?

Re: vintage or 'current' mme. ablas
Oh man! I used to have a source, but am unsure of how to find her now. Joanie was a dancer here in LA until about 10 years ago. She almost exclusively wore Ablas or self mades.
The question is, now that her Dad has closed his book store (sobs) how to find her?
I'll see what I can do!

Re: vintage or 'current' mme. ablas
This seller on e-bay has quite a lot of them:
eBay Store - Egyptian Bazaar: Bellydance: BELLYDANCE ,CROCHET BALADI , DRESS, BELLY DANCE
I think I remember seeing some at Turquoise International, too.
And Dahlal was in Cairo right after Madame Abla died and brought back a huge shipment of what was left in her atelier, so you might e-mail & ask if she has what you're looking for.
Assuming you don't get lucky enough to find a used one here on Bhuz, of course!

Re: vintage or 'current' mme. ablas
I have a royal blue Abla that is truly vintage, with a straight hip belt that has very thick, straight glass beaded fringe that goes to the KNEE! When do you ever see that anymore? I bought it from my teacher gently used in 1994, so I don't know what year it was made. Unfortunately I beat the heck out of it wearing it constantly for the first few years I was restaurant dancing, but I do enjoy just looking at it now
I've been thinking about selling the original skirt and cape (yes, CAPE) for years because I never wear them. The skirt is sort of a Spanish style with a big ruffle around the bottom and sequinned/beaded designs, and the cape is a large half circle with arm slits and goes to the floor. It's that early '90s Egyptian style where you can enter flourishing the cape like a veil, and then drop it partway through. I actually just laid it out yesterday to take pictures, because I'm putting it on the market.....

Oh - since you're looking for good dancer juju, I should add that it was Angelika Nemeth's costume.... She actually kind of wanted to buy it back at some point but it was too late... I had already beaten it to death! LOL

Not sure if this will work... here is a photo of it worn with a white skirt instead of the blue...

Re: vintage or 'current' mme. ablas
what are the accent colors? i just let go my 1st costume (hekmet, royal and silver) cuz the colors dont work anymore, more the silver part........royal i can wear as long as the accents are warm (gold, bronze, greens, etc etc)
looks amaaaaazing, and the skirt/cape combo is exactly what i had in mind as far as old school vintage (my dance mommy did the cape flourish BIG TIME), adore the long fringe
this is an awesome possibility. any other pics? and love the 'provenance' of it! THAT is some ju-ju
that's a lovely pic btw............not many people can pull of white :D

Ruta, I know you're looking for pre-loved, but this Eman is a vendor who is in northern VA. Fantastic Designs - Awsome Egyptian Costumes by Madam Alba She carries a lot of Abla stuff.
