I had the same problem with uploading avi files. So I took the original file, turned it into a mpeg4 or WMV and it worked fine. It really sucks to see yourself dance out of sync when you've tried so hard to follow the music.
What editing program are you using for compression? I use VirtualDub, so I can only speak to how to fix the problem in it, but you may be able to find a similar function in whatever you're using. I go to the audio tab and set interleaving to "Interleave audio every 1 ms" instead of the default setting of "...every 1 frames". If you can find a similar setting within whatever program you're using, it should fix the problem.

I took the video from a dvd , and saved it in .avi (I think...)
I will tru to turn it into a .wmv
if i can figure out how to do that...

is Windows the OS on your computer? if so, Windows Movie Maker (WMM) should automatically be installed on your computer. Check under "Program Files". Open WMM then drag and drop your AVI file into the WMM window. Drag it to the timeline underneath then select "File > Save Movie File > (enter the location and file name you want to use) then I use "Best quality for playback on my computer"" It will take a little while to render the video. When it's done upload to YouTube.

i have that window movie maker thing in my computer.
actually i realized this morning that my file isnt .avi , but it is .wmv so i am even more confused
