Program for editing music?

What program do you all use to edit your performance music? I want to make some music shorter and add just a section of a song at the end. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks

I use Nero Burn pro about 75 and worth every penny! Steep learning curve for this older brain...but do able!

Re: Program for editing music?

We need an FAQ for this! I like Audacity - it's free, does everything I need, and I find it very easy to use and intuitive (some Bhuzzers have reported that they don't share that experience, YMMV).

I downloaded audacity previously but could not figure out how to use it. Maybe I will try it again....

Re: Program for editing music?

I asked this question a few months ago and downloaded Audacity after steffib's recommendation. I really like it! It's easy to use once you figure it out, and there are some online tutorials and messge boards (you can get to them from the Audacity website) to help out.

Re: Program for editing music?

Three pieces of info that make using Audacity easier:

1. Input should be mp3 files. It doesn't like e.g. the DRM-protected files from iTunes. Lauren recommended a program called Switch that converts files nicely (but it doesn't help with iTunes files).

2. To save the result as an mp3, one needs to install extra software that doesn't come with the program (there is a reason for that, it is not neglect by the developers). The website gives good instructions.

3. Sometimes Audacity is very slow, and seems to react to nothing. Stop (no pause) the song, breathe, sip coffee, and check Bhuz - chances are it will play nice again after that ;-)

Re: Program for editing music?

I use Goldwave. Dowloaded it for free and have been very happy with it. Was pretty easy to figure out (of course you would have to purchase it if you actually want instructions).

Re: Program for editing music?

I use the consumer version of Sound Forge, which costs about $70 and is currently sold by Sony. I think they call it "Screenblast" Sound Forge. There's a more expensive (over $200) professional version which I have never felt the need to try because the consumer version does everything I need it to. I've been using it since 1997, and am very happy with it.

I also have Adobe Audition, which came with my Adobe video editing suite. It used to be known as Cool Edit before Adobe bought it. I find that I strongly prefer Sound Forge, but I don't know whether that's because Sound Forge really is easier, or whether it's because I get too impatient with learning unfamiliar technology. So the only time I use it is when I want to edit the sound in a video file (MPEG or AVI), which the consumer version of Sound Forge doesn't let me do.

Re: Program for editing music?

I listed out all the music editing programs I know about on this page, along with pricing:

LARaqs Resources

I use the Digital Audio Editor, which is pretty much exactly the same as Sound Forge but it only lets you have one file open at a time (so there is a lot of copying and pasting invloved when burning sets...I would have paid the extra $25 for Sound Forge had I realized this at the time...)

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Maybe I will get one of them to work for me.

Re: Program for editing music?

Does anyone know how to get files from I-Tunes converted to MP3 so that I can cut a song I am going to dance to?

Re: Program for editing music?

I use Wavepad, free to download (trial version), simple to use, but quite basic.... great for cutting, fading, splicing together.
