Help with New Website?

Hi all,

I just paid for a 'real' website. Unfortunately it does not appear to come with a builder as the site claims. What can I do about this? I know nothing of HTML; is there a drag n drop free site where I can upload a web page? Is there a way I can use the one already in existence at tripod for that page? Let me know. I'd really like to start using it! It's unfortunate because I have a very specific 'look' I wanted for my site but no way to get it up there.

Also, does someone know how to convert video files so they can be emailed?

Hi, Brea,

I'm a Webmaster for a living. It sounds like they just gave you space on a server, and turned you loose. Do you have something like Front Page or Dreamweaver to build your pages? As far as video files are concerned, when you move one out to the server, you would just create a link from a web page to the video, and people can either play it or save it. As far as converting videos to e-mail, the video files can usually just be sent along as an attachment.

Hope this helps, and if it doesn't, maybe we can figure out a way to work together to further your project.

Re: Help with New Website?

Hi Sylvia,

I wish I had Dreamweaver! I won't use FrontPage (seen too many disasters there). I would be forever grateful for any help on the page! *sigh* I like my one on tripod, just that the popups and the tripodyness of it makes it look cheap and silly.

I did try to email a video and it did not work; the file was too large. I would have to compress it somehow I think. It went on youtube OK.

Re: Help with New Website?

If your new provider claimed to have a website builder but doesn't, I'd e-mail them. Perhaps they do have one but you need direction in how to find/use it? If that's not the case, I'd ask for my money back.

bizland.com is VERY cheap, offers a free sitebuilder, store, search engine submissions, site stats and loads of other features -- I've used them for years. There are lots of other cheap providers out there who offer sitebuilding tools as well, I wouldn't stay with someone who promised you that feature but didn't deliver!!

*reiterating though -- send them an e-mail or call them. If they promised you a builder, they probably do offer one but you may need a little guidance to find/access it.

Hi, Brea,

I have Dreamweaver and would be glad to help you put some HTML together.

How large a file you can attach to an e-mail is controlled by the gremlins who administer your mail server. I don't know of a way to optimize or compress WMVs (I can do some research to see if there is a method to do this), but as a rule, sound/video files run large. Just how big is the file?

I agree! If they were supposed to have sold you a builder, they should deliver. I'll still be glad to help you sort it out if I can.

Re: Help with New Website?

This provider hasn't responded to ANY of my emails or tickets or anything. I even posted on their forum, nothing!

I appreciate the offer of help!! I'd love to have help with DreamWeaver so I can have a classy looking site. :) I will check on the video file size and get back to you. I have to run and teach dance right now; be back later. Thanks!

Re: Help with New Website?

Who is the provider and where is their sales page?

There are turn key providers that have a content management system. You just select the background, pictures and colors etc and start typing away. If you know enough to use MS Word then you can probably figure out how to use a content management system.

Hi HubicRuzz,

It's a site called hostcolor. I might just not understand how it all works.

Re: Help with New Website?

yes, I have tried this several times, but it keeps telling me that my ftp server is not there or it is wrong. I get this error message:

The FTP server ****** is not one of our hosting servers.
We are unable to upload your page

In any event, the builder claims to be tiny and only can accomodate 2-3 pages. This is rather frustrating. :(

Re: Help with New Website?

So it sounds like it doesn't like your ftp server details.

I did a check on breamorgiane.com and it is hosted by Host Color so why it's saying the ftp server is not theirs doesn't make much sense.

So in the server name are you typing

ftp.breamorgiane.com

?

Re: Help with New Website?

*sigh* I tried it that way too, all excited that it may have been the reason that it wasn't working (I didn't put in the ftp part before)...but got the same error message. I've emailed about this but they don't write back. Not sure what to do here.

Re: Help with New Website?

Just curious what happened?

Something else you can try is typing

ftp.hostcolor.com

in the server name.

No, Sylvia made it. I never did find out anything about their builder.

Well...I'm late to this but I'm so glad you got it worked out. Even if it isn't via the site builder.
