"It doesn't work" is a bit on the vague side ;-) So, if you give details what OS you use, and the symptoms, it may be a lot easier to help. "It doesn't work" is like leaving a message a doctor's answering machine and saying "I don't feel well - can you write me a prescription?"

i have OSX 10.3.. i think. i'll have to check, my mac is at home. i try to import a song file into the program and it just comes up as static. i've tried various versions of sound files and it does the same thing to all of them.

I'd venture the guess that you're not importing an mp3 file, because when you try to do that - random noise. And, if you're working with iTunes, I'd further guess that iTunes is set to rip by default into m4a files. (Guess how I know ...)

Given that you are on an older Mac, you can't use PC software, like Windows Movie Maker.

Sorry about that... I breezed through this post and didn't realize you were on a Mac. Steffi's right - Windows Movie Maker won't work...

So, do you have itunes? You can have your songs converted to wav format, which Audacity will import. Although for a while, my audacity wasnt importing the wavs either, then it stopped. Shurgs. Technology kills me. I really love Audacity, tho.

Really.

How?! I couldn't figure out garageband at all. It's the one thing I don't use on my mac... I had no idea you could edit music with it.

My mac came with a program called 'sound studio' I found it in my applications folder. It's a simple, clean music editing program that -- so far! -- has let me do everything I want to do.

Check your applications folder, see if it's in there!

Garage Band: Haven't used it to edit music myself (I love audacity, and since I discovered the trick of lining up tracks, even more so), but one of my troupe mates told me he has.

I use iTunes to convert to a wav (from CD or mp3) and then audacity to do the cut & splice.

I do a fair bit of editing (usually cutting out sections when I want a shorter song), and could do it for you. What do you need done? If it's really quick, I can do it for free. If it's more complicated, I'd be happy to do a trade of some kind (maybe for a CD you're sick of?) Drop me a private message with the details (the song, what you want changed, what format you want it in when it's done, what your timeframe is, etc.)

I had a go with garage band the other day. You can cut tracks and splice them together, add other tracks etc. It takes a bit of getting used to though. Just lucky i have a software engineer for a hubby i guess!

I use Audiosurgeon and Adobe Audition. They took a little bit of effort to figure out but I can't live without them now.

i do music editing..here are my rates/info if you can't find something you can use.

MUSIC EDITING (for dancers)
We all know that most music pieces are not the right length for a dance routine, especially for Middle Eastern Dance. Now, you can get your music edited and ready to hand to the sound guy.

RATES:
$15 per song. you get a clean edited version of the original, burned to CD
$50 per 7-10 minute routine/3-4 songs, tracked out, lightly mastered for volume consistency, and burned to a CD (includes an exit/outtro using one of your songs, ie 30 seconds from the opening song)
$10 per song for a routine over 10 minutes/4 songs

How does it work?
You send me a CD(s) with the original(s) song either roughly edited, or not at all edited. If you have an idea of where you want the edit, you let me know. If you have no idea where to cut, I will edit it down to the length you desire. I will post an mp3 on a web page for you to listen to. You email me feedback/changes, and I re-edit to your desire. I will only re-edit one time with no fee, so please be clear with your instructions. An additional fee will be required for further editing. The service includes bringing your music to the right listening level for a balanced performance CD. When completed, I will mail your originals, and a burned CD back to you.

For a full routine, I suggest a fast/slow/fast/etc..format, but it is entirely up to you.

Send your cd(s) and instructions to

Symbolic Insight Studios

Payment is due in advance. Please make checks out to Julia Petteway, or you can pay through paypal, using the address jawahir@raqsjawahir.com ($3 additional fee per transaction). Please be clear about what you are paying for.

Dear Latriamou,

We have 4 Macs at our house and I use Sound Studio by FeltTip. I think the problem might be that you are using Mac OS 10 on your G3 computer. If you go to this website: http://www.felttip.com/downloads/ you can download different versions of Sound Studio for free!

Hope this helps.

Take care, Rick Fink

I've heard Amadeus ii is a great tool, and I think it's around $30. But don't get the newer version...the "ii" is the version that's supposedly great for simple things like fades and cuts and stuff. I JUST got a macbook last week and haven't tried garage band yet, but I'm looking into it. So far, I just need to figure out how to import songs from my iTunes. I'm not sure how to convert formats. If anyone has any info out there, feel free!
