Saving/downloading videos from YouTube?
I know this was discussed on old Bhuz, but I can't find it and it would be good to have it on new Bhuz as well--
Is there any way to download or save videos from YouTube?

KeepVid is an application that allows you to save YouTube (and other) format videos. You will have to download the free FLV player too on the KeepVid site.
Just beware: this is a time-suck of epic proportions!

Firefox has an extension called Videodownloader that works fast and well. You go to your YouTube vid, click on the Videodownloader icon, and save the file with the name of your choice and an .flv extension. RealPlayer v.10 can then play them.

quick tutorial:
1. download firefox browser if you don't already have it.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
2. install the videodowloader which is an add-on to the firefox browser
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2390
3. restart your firefox browser
you should now have a little icon on the bottom right of your browser window
when you hover your mouse over it the word "videodownloader" will appear
4. download and install the flv player [or use realplayer as described above]
http://www.download.com/3001-2139_4-10505954.html
5. go to youtube. open the video you want. click the "videodownloader" icon in the bottom right of your firefox web browser window.
6. a new window from videodownloader will open. click the button that says "download link"
7. file will be called "get_video"
save to disk [or where ever]
rename your file to whatever filename you want .flv
example: change get-video to nagua.flv
8. open with the flv player , realplayer, or video player of your choice that works.
good luck. hope this helps.
p.s.
tube sucker is also a popular piece of software that lets you batch download tons of video.
http://tube-sucker.en.softonic.com/
i am a safety freak when it comes to downloads on my systems. i won't use this one because i don't know what is in it. what if it has all kinds of mal-ware? lots of people use it, but lots of people don't care what infects their systems either.
if anyone knows the safety status of tube sucker and where do download a clean copy, please post. thanks
p.ps. while you are "borrowing video for educational purposes"
check out this video of ganil hawa , so romantic. we could all use a vacation like this

Thanks so much everyone for the help! I'm already a firefox user, so videodownloader sounds like the perfect solution for me.

Just out of curiosity, in what situations do people think it's ethical/unethical to download & save youtube clips? And how do you think it's OK to use them or not OK to use them?
For instance:
- footage of yourself from a hafla that the organizer uploads?
- video clips from professionally produced DVDs that someone else has uploaded?
- Watching them yourself on your computer
- Compiling a DVD of other people's dance clips for instruction in the classroom?
The thought that someone could be downloading my clips (or worse, clips of my student group) to show in class & pick apart with their students makes me ill.
I put clips of my students online, with their permission, so their relatives in other states can see them perform, and so new students can study class choreos at home. But knowing people could download them & do whatever with them makes me want to take them down.
Sad.

I like to save videos as a source of inspiration! There are so many bellydance videos marked as "inappropriate" (gah!) on YouTube that there is a chance my favourite video might be gone next week. I don't have access to live performances, so YouTube is often the only way I'll ever see most dancers (and most dancers don't have official DVDs for sale).
Please don't take down your videos because you think that they are going to be used in bad ways and picked apart. I really don't think that our community of dancers is like that. Are they?

Me too, I save videos to watch later because so many times I've bookmarked a video, only to find its been taken down. I also watch for inspiration, and to learn from. Mostly though, they're just for entertainment.
Thanks for the the link Shaynaz!

Videodownloader would only work sporadically for me and I didn't want to download another program.
I found out that Youtube videos are saved in your temporary Internet files folder.
(Tools | Internet options | settings | view files).
They are named something like "get_video?video_id=P7QD9s7KpPQ."
You must copy the file from the folder & save somewhere else (using the extension .flv). To play the file, drag it onto FLVplayer.
It is a cumbersome process , but it does work!

Lauren,
You bring up a good point.
Also, many people are uploading videos from DVDs that producers/organizers of shows/ dancers are marketing for sale. If this is solely for marketing purposes (a little bit just as a teaser to get someone to buy the vid) then OK.. . . But it appears that a lot more of the footage is getting uploaded at times. This could represent a lose of income to the producers . . . but who really knows.
I like to try before I buy . . . . but I haven't gotten in to downloading/saving on my computer . . . not enough space!!!

For me, im not downloading student dancers. Its professional dancers that I download. Nor do I bring videos to class to pick apart. My main thing is to be able to watch them without having my computer. I like to study and take notes and learn new combos, etc. Especially the dancers from other countries that I cannot get videos from. Theres one dancer that i downloaded all her videos because she doesnt sell them outside of her country. So why not download her youtube videos so i can at least have those!

well now that you have the videos, would you be more interested in extracting the songs????
I got your attentions now huh?
I use Moyea converter to convert the video to no video MP3. I love that program, so if you are looking for a song and cannot find it anywhere but in some video in youtube, you can download the video and convert it, and save it in your music folder and import it Media Player or any other program you use to listen to.

Hmm, curious to know why someone needs to download them? Can't you just save it in your favorites on your youtube site. I have 200 saved on mine that I can go to anytime I want to see what someone did? I'm I over looking some small important fact that I should know about? Please tell.
