Videotape Messing Up VCR? Or is it DISH?

Has anyone had this problem?

We just got DISH network recently. I put a tape into my VCR that was a bit rumpled in a spot, and the next thing I know, after I get my VCR all hooked into the TV/Satellite system, none of my tapes play right. Even after I unhooked all things except the TV and VCR.

Can a messed-up tape ruin a VCR?

Yes, a messed-up tape can ruin a VCR. I think I've heard that it can pull the heads out of alignment or something.
