has anybody gotten their hair done in an Egyptian salon? (especially blowouts)
what is the pricing like, and how were your results?

The only person I know who's had her hair done in Egypt, was my London based Egyptian friend, who has Egyptian hair and moans all the time that no-one in London knows how to deal with it.

My main reservation about having my hair done in Egypt would therefore be that no-one there knows how to deal with European hair.

I have had my hair done in Egypt many times now and if you go to the right places it is a fantastic experience.

Ahmed and Abdou have a few branches but they are very expensive and you have to know who to ask for.
There is another I have started to use in the Ard el Golf area btween Heliopolis and Nasr City.
Me and my daughter had both of our hair some for a wedding, French manicure, pedicure, eyebrow, helawa on arms and make-up for 20 for both of us.
We were there for the full day and came out like beauty queens. It can cost this just for a wash and blow in Ahmed and Abdou. I only used them because my apartent was in the same building in Mohandiseen.

beafarhana, I don't have european hair. that's why I'm kind of looking forward to the experience. I used to go to a wonderful moroccan hairdresser in LA, and he was so cheap and my hair looked awesome afterward!

caroline_afifi, 20LBP is about $5 USD, if I'm correct? that's so cheap! or wait, did you mean in English money? I just looked back over how much stuff you got done, and that's prob the case. Still 40 bucks is a very low price compared to the US.

It was 200Le or about 20 GBP.

A good hairdresser in cairo can usually deal with anyone if you are not put off by irons on the fire (to curl your hair!)

cairo is the best place in the world for 'Big do's'
Now they are back in fashion it is really good to have your hair done there.
The hair dressers in the UK still think everyone wants their hair pin staright with no life in it!

Re: hairdressers? getting hair done in cairo

I got my nails done at the Mena house salon. it was fine and I can't remember how much it cost.

I've actually been wondering about the hair in Cairo. Has anybody Black or with thick kinky hair gotten it done there?

I usually wear braids or twists and i'm wondering if I can get it done there. I'm trying to move there in the fall. I know there are a bunch of Sudanese ladies so i'm assuming ignorantly that they can braid hair but where do I even buy hair there?

Funny . . . the times I've had my hair done in Cairo, they would blow it out absolutely straight, which I really hate . . . the driers are very hot and they'd tug really hard on the brushes to get it straight, lol!!! I've been going a bit more au naturel with my hair.

I have had some great color done a couple of times, but I haven't bothered to go the last couple of trips.

I would have thought they did ultra straight too since there are a bunch of Egyptian Salons here and flat ironing is their specialty

I have seen them do really straight hair then put big rollers in. I suppose it depends on where you go like anywhere else.

Re: hairdressers? getting hair done in cairo

My one and only experience with hairdressers in Egypt was when I was doing commericials. My hair was done by a professional? on the set. What a mess. My hair is fine and thin...obviously not what they are used too. That was the last time! Now I just do my own or wait til I'm in the States to get it done.

Re: hairdressers? getting hair done in cairo

I would say that the hair dressers are not so used to the fine, thin and limp hair there...I have that and got my hair thinned out, then flat ironed!:D

The hair dresser insisted that this was the most flattering style for me.

The makeup artist put blusher on the nose(to the point that I looked like I had a severe cold),dark lipliner and drawed my eyebrows really close together...
I didnt recognize myself in the mirror, but every egyptian I knew complimented me that evening about how I looked like a beautiful movie star in my "new style"?:D

Certainly dont mean to pick on egyptian hair dressers or makeup artists,
its just a different style than in my homeland Sweden, where high heels and eyeliner is quite uncommon:)

Heres a collage of fashion makeup looks on YouTube:

hmm, that sounds like an interesting effect. any pictures?
it's true that when you go cross-culture for beauty treatments you get surprises in the process. both pleasant and otherwise.

I let a lebanese makeup artist do my face once, and she plucked off all my eyebrows until they were literally one hair thick from the arch outward. then she asked what I thought. I was like "hmmm, different!"

Re: hairdressers? getting hair done in cairo

I never make my hair done in Greece but always in Cairo lol
Its an experience !!!!!!!
The flaming Iron that is resting in the Sphinx shape always amuse me.
My hair are kind of curly, and i have them straight straight or big big in Cairo and always have great result.
The cost with washing them, till the end cost at local places around 5 euro which is not even tip for hair salon in Greece.
Go for it !!!!!!!

Re: hairdressers? getting hair done in cairo

I look through my pics too see if I have picture evidence:D

Lebanese makeup artists are fantastic but many favors VERY thin brows...
They look at my albanian caterpillars and reach for wax, thread and razors,LOL!

However I recalled that Outi has written an article about fashion in Egypt,
and she says:
"The strangest detail in the makeup has to do with blush. It's also applied on the tip of the nose. Doing this of course creates an illusion of a smaller nose and whiter skin around the eyes. It basically brings out the eyes. To me it just resembles a drunk person, since those who drink a lot tend to develop a red nose."

Here is the whole article:
