Who's dancing in Beirut?

Its Islamic New Year next week so there's a public holiday, we have a long weekend and we're off to Beirut. Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants/clubs in Beirut? With a dancer of course!

Re: Who's dancing in Beirut?

I used to have recommendations, but nowadays, I'm not sure.
Try Nahr El Founoun, it's a classic.

Oh, and you could check out it restaurant India is still there?
203 Maarad Street by Place de d'Etoile. One of the best Indian restaurants I have ever been to!

I should have updated this a long time ago:
Travel to Beirut
But with the political situation going downhill very fast after my last visit in May 2006, I wasn't very motivated...

It's certainly going to be cold at this time of the year!

Hi Meissoun

I looked at your Beirut page first, and I've taken the details of the places you recommend in it, thanks. At the moment our plan, inshallah, is to spend the first day having a look around Beirut (I hear the National Museum is great), second day up the coast visiting Byblos etc and the last day at Baalbeck.

Is the costume you're wearing in your profile picture the green/pearl costume you bought from me? It looks fabulous on you.

Aziza

Yes, it's the one from you and I will be forever grateful that you sold it to me

It even has made its way into an IAMED video after all!
Here's more:
Galerie Raqs Sharqi

Actually, I only wear the tiara for pictures, I am afraid to loose it during a performance...

I hope you have a lovely time in Lebanon. And I SO hope that they can work things out down there so I can go again!

Re: Who's dancing in Beirut?

Back from Beirut, a city that is definitely on a war footing. There was more tension in the air than even in Yemen, my updated blog's here. if you'd like to read all the story. I saw an episode of World Bellydance Championship at the airport on the way out - completely unspeakable, one of the contestants appeared to be wearing a fruit salad instead of a costume, very Carmen Miranda in an extremely untidy way.

The women of Beirut are "dressed up to the nines" in this year's Beirut winter uniform of skin tight jeans and knee length boots. In Beirut I was surprised to hear mostly French spoken, not Arabic. Out in the countryside everyone speaks Arabic, consistently English is viewed as the third language.

Over the four days we went up the coast to Byblos, inland to the astounding Jeita Grotto cave system, out into the Hezbollah heartland of the Bekaa Valley to see the incredible Roman ruins at Baalbeck and down to Saida (the biblical Sidon) to see the crusader castle and sample sanioura which is a speciality of Saida. It's a sweet biscuit which I can only describe as a shortbread/pavlova cross coated with icing sugar and its yummo!

Lebanon is beautiful but the wanton destruction of the country by various other "interested parties" is horrendous.

Arrived back in Dubai this morning at 5:35am to find total traffic chaos caused by road closures due to the visit of the US president. I attempted to get to work but after it took me 40minutes to get out of my driveway and 300 metres along the road I called it quits and went back home. At that point a friend rang who had been stuck in traffic for an hour without moving. Tomorrow the entire centre of Dubai is locked down from 6am to 5pm. As a result nobody can get to work and the government has just declared (at 4:45pm) tomorrow a public holiday.

If I hadn't known you'd been to Beirut, I would guess the place right just by this description
There's no such thing as "overdressed" in Beirut!
And many people speak a funny mix of French, English and Arabic in one sentence...

BTW, last time I also got a fabulous haircut in Beirut, it's on the list of "things to do" in this town!

Oh, how I wish for peace in Lebanon! Both for the people and for me, so that I can go there again!!!
