Unexplained ankle pain?
Since Saturday I've had a weird pain in my right ankle and I'm not sure why because I don't recall tripping or anything.
It hurts more when my foot is flexed rather than pointed and it comes and goes. At times I won't feel anything and then I'm unable to walk. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I just don't want to go see a doctor if it's something minor.

Re: Unexplained ankle pain?
That was one of the symptoms I had with my herniated disk. Before I had surgery, the disk was compressing a nerve that runs down my right leg. The pain was terrible. I had pain in my glutes, side of the knee, side of the shin, and ankle . . . all from that one nerve.
If the ankle pain is your only symptom, it's not likely you have a herniated disk, but possibly a pinched nerve. Take it easy for a while. Take some anti-inflamatories and see if that works.

Re: Unexplained ankle pain?
I tend to have weak ankles...more on my right than my left. A bad pair of heels will cause it to swell and be sore for a while. As a general rule of thumb, I try to stick to flats.

And on really bad days...I'll wear an ankle brace from the drugstore.
I also notice that when my calves are tight, the pain is worse. So maybe a bit of stretching is in order?

Re: Unexplained ankle pain?
Just noticed this thread- my husband's got exactly the same problem, which started up three months ago. Luckily his sister is a podiatrist- she's diagnosed it as something which sounds like Tarsius Sinusitis (probably spelled wrong but I know it reminded me of nostrils!) and is an inflamation of the sheath surrounding a nerve which is getting trapped by a bone.
Poor Sam has been feeling pretty sorry for himself, mainly because football is out of the question and driving hurts, but it's responding almost magically well to...
Strapping tape under the foot to keep the arch from slumping, and a bit of Ibuprofen.
That's it. We have to keep this strapping tape on for a couple of months until everything realigns itself and the inflamation goes down (I suppose something swollen *would* rub on other bits) and he should be back to normal. He's been using an ankle brace, which has relieved symptoms, but isn't using it at all a fortnight later because we're treating the underlying problem.
Hope this helps anybody else who's limping!

Re: Unexplained ankle pain?
wow... thank you for all the responses! I didn't dance on it this weekend and tried some stretches and haven't felt anything in the past day or so, but I'm going to get it checked if it comes back again.

Also remember to check your shoes and see if they have worn out weirdly or you have changed the way you step. Or even lacing them differently. This can give you all kinds of clues.

Tried staying off of it, gained weight, did nothing for the pain. Tried brace and wraps. Did nothing for the pain. Tried acupressure, pain still here. Pain is an unfortunate side effect of life, but it proves I'm still breathing so it's all good.

Re: Unexplained ankle pain?
I end up with top of the foot and ankle pain in the winter because of the weight of my duvet. If I sleep on my back it pushes down on the top of my foot and stretches it too much. Sleeping on my side or stomach makes it all better. Not sure if this could be happening to you but you never know!
