easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I'm trying to get more fruit into my diet, so I thought smoothies would be a good way to do that.
Anyone wanna share your fruit smoothie recipes? I'm lactose intolerant but have a lot of access to lactose-free dairy products. I have a really strong sweet tooth, so healthy alternatives to ice cream would be a plus, but if you use ice cream, i wanna see those, too! ..l;,
thanks!

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I like blending a handful of frozen banana chunks and a handful of frozen strawberries with a little bit of apple juice (approximately enough juice to cover maybe 2/3 of the fruit in the blender). It's even better with a scoop of vanilla protein powder. I keep frozen banana chunks in the freezer for smoothies in the Summer, it's good use for slightly over ripe ones.
I also like blending frozen mango chunks with mango juice.
Hurry up Summer.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
Frozen banana chunks (maybe 2/3 banana) a spoonful of peanut butter, scoop of chocolate protein powder (I use whey), a little milk (1/4 c maybe?) and a few ice cubes is good. Sorry I don't know exact measurements, I make smoothies all Summer long and just eyeball the proportions.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
1/2 cup of water
1 handful of spinach
1 half of an apple - cored
1 whole banana
Ice to preferred thickness.
Put in the water and spinach - blend a few pulses, then add the apple and the banana and blend some more. When blended enough, add the ice until the ice is blended.
Your concoction looks like a mixture of green froth, sounds disgusting, but tastes awesome! If "Fresh" had a taste, it would be this smoothie. Don't worry, it doesn't taste like spinach. It's freakin' delicious.
I wanted to add that it does come out sweet and will satisfy a sweet tooth.Last edited by AllyisLuma; 02-06-2010 at 12:44 PM. Reason: Adding stuff.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
aw man. i looove smoothies, used to do some all the time.
just shove anything in there! :D the rule i follow is you need at least one fruit that'll make juice (like oranges) but other than that, go ahead and mix anything you think'll be good. everything in the blender! no added water, sugar or whatnot. just fresh fruits.
i love adding red fruits (strawberries, raspberries...), and also banana gives a certain thickness and softens the taste.
try adding melon. kiwis are great too
also great in summer is adding fresh mint leaves.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I freeze regular yogurt and add it to my smoothies, yummy. Plus the smoothies are thicker and richer. I freeze single serving portions of yogurt so I can take it with me running errands, to work and dance class/seminars. I consider it a treat in lieu of ice cream.
I love watermelon. In order to have watermelon during the off-season I purchase several during the summer, remove seeds and toss the chunks in plastic bags. I can add it to smoothies or serve it as an unexpected dessert for guests. Well, only if I do not eat it first. I also freeze the watermelon juice in ice trays.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
If you do use spinach (e.g. AllyisLuma's recipe), you can also add 1/2 beet and it will make the smoothie red instead of green, it looks way more appetizing (IMO). Can't taste the beets (which I dislike in any other form) just like you can't taste the spinach, good way to sneak in all the goodness, but you need a powerful blender.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I use plain, unsweetened yogurt, some ice, fruits of choice and a splash of Monin flavored syrup (its the stuff they use in coffee or italian sodas). My fave is Coconut syrup with bananas in the smoothie! (And I love just the almond flavored syrup with the yogurt as well.)
I also like to get a bag of mixed frozen fruit (that has peaches, melon and whatever else) and a bag of mixed frozen berries. Blend some of each with a dollup of honey, some fruit nectar, and sometimes a sprig of mint.

Ooooh, I've been on a breakfast smoothie kick - I just toss a banana, a half dozen strawberries, 1/2c low fat french vanilla yogurt and some frozen mango chunks in the blender. Sooooo yummy! (and I swear I'm not just saying that because I'm a gazillion months pregnant!)

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
If you've got about 10 minutes or so to put a smoothie together, this is my favorite recipe. I shucked 30 pounds a couple summers ago, and this is one thing I was doing. Every morning, I'd make a blender of this adding a scoop or two of vanilla protein powder and some ice. If I was going to be in a hurry the next morning, I'd put a lot of it together in the blender container at night and leave that in the fridge. It made a blender full, and I sipped on it half the day, keeping it in the fridge or freezer until finished. You get in most of your day's recommended servings of fruit with this alone.
Fruit Salad Smoothie
1 cup Orange Juice (any style)
1 cup plain or vanilla non-fat yogurt, soy milk or tofu
2 kiwi, peeled and cut into chunks
½ cup fresh pineapple chunks
1 large banana, cut into chunks
1 cup strawberries, halved (6-8)
1 Tbsp. honey
Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth and creamy.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I chuck in a banana, whatever frozen berries I have on hand (probably about half a cup if I smooshed 'em in), a good dollop of plain yoghurt (maybe 1/4 a cup?), either some orange or carrot juice, and a splash of vanilla extract. Carrot juice is quite sweet and is really lovely in smoothies. I eyeball things, for the most part, and start off conservative with the liquid, adding more liquid until I get the consistency I like.
I saw a recipe for a banana and peanut butter smoothie. I'll have to dig it out and give it a try.
If you are looking for some more nutrients, you can also blend in a raw egg (assuming you are not worried about salmonella - I don't know anyone who has gotten salmonella from blending a raw egg into their smoothie - and you SERIOUSLY can't taste the egg at all!!), or oils like flaxseed, grapeseed, and the like to add some good fatty acids to the mix. I know some people who like chucking in a bit of protien powder as well, but I haven't tried that yet.Last edited by halftruths; 02-06-2010 at 08:19 PM. Reason: forgot to add some info...

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I like to throw some almond or cashew butter or tahini in my smoothies. Nice little protein boost w/o having to buy the powder and the taste isn't as strong as peanut butter. Although, I do like a banana, peanut butter and chocolate soy milk as a smoothie.
Also, I always blend kale, spinach, or beet greens into fruit smoothies. Doesn't hurt the taste, but the benefits are obvious. Radishes will lend a spicy kick and beets a nice earthy taste and brilliant red color.

- 3 cups of berries (I use some each of red raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries but you could use any combination you like)
- 1 cup of Greek yogurt (if you're anti-dairy, you can either substitute or omit)
- 2 Tablespoons of ground-up flaxseed
- 1 Tablespoon of honey
- 1 cup of either pomegranate juice or cherry juice, depending on my mood. Although, you could replace this with crushed ice for a thicker smoothie.
- 4 heaping tablespoons of apple sauce (or 1/4 cup of it)
- 1 cup of milk (if you don't care for milk, feel free to substitute extra pomegranate or cherry juice; or, omit it completely if you want a thicker smoothie)
Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I drink a berry smoothie every morning. The following recipe makes 4 of them, so I drink one, and put the other 3 in the refrigerator for the next few days:
I recommend putting the liquids in the blender first, then the berries. Makes it easier for the blender to puree everything.Last edited by *Shira*; 02-09-2010 at 02:58 PM.

Perhaps more milkshake then smoothie, but delicious nevertheless:
- milk with banana and cinnamon.
- milk with avocado and fruit sec (dried fruits & nuts)

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
Another smoothie recipe -- I make this for me & hubster:
3/4 c fruit juice (any)
1 orange
3 spears of fresh pineapple
1 banana
1/2 cup almonds
8-12 frozen strawberries (depending on size)
1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
I have a VitaMix which is an industrial strength blender and it makes it very smooth. The almonds almost give it a dairy feeling, but no dairy, lots of calcium, some protien and fiber. It's about 300 calories and keeps me full until lunchtime.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
The milkshake I discovered in Jakarta:
couple scoops vanilla ice cream
1/2 ripe avacado
2 tblsp of chocolate sauce
milk to desired consistency
very rich and creamy, tastes, oddly enough, like a pistachio milkshake. Can definitely substitute low fat and lactose free ingredients.

The spinach is such a good idea! I had never thought about adding it before and I like spinach. I added some to the regular smoothie that I make and it tasted great.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I make a smoothie every morning too. My usual (because it's fast) is:
1 cup light vanilla soy milk
1/2 cup - 1 cup greek vanilla yogurt (depends on how thick I want it)
1 cup frozen fruit (I use a mix of strawberries, peaches, pineapple, mango)
2 scoops Aria vanilla protein powder
***Ooh, wanted to mention that I also throw a TBS of ground flaxseed in there when I have some in the house
It's very filling and helps me get some calcium too.Last edited by ceydahazine; 02-19-2010 at 09:33 AM.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
I'm using Alton Brown's recipe loosely, frozen fruit (blueberries, black berries, peaches and strawberries) a 1/2 banana, soy milk and grape juice. Usually a 1/4 cup or so of each works. I mix the fruits bag it up and put it in the freezer. Take one out each evening to thaw overnight. It's working for me.

Re: easy fruit smoothie recipes?
Got an over-ripe mango? Blend the mango, soy or rice milk, and honey/agave to taste. Similar to a Costa Rican fruit milk. A glass of heaven!
I have also done overripe pear, ginger, soymilk, and honey/agave... sounds odd but it's DELISH.
You can add protein powder to these if you like.
